Your kid isn’t lazy. Their brain works differently. Understanding this difference will change everything about how you approach homework struggles. 🧠 What neuroscience shows: 1️⃣ Video games provide immediate consequences for every action: Click, reward. Move, points. Solve, level up. 2️⃣ Homework provides nothing: When a problem is solved on paper, nothing happens. Consequences are delayed by weeks. 3️⃣ ADHD brains cannot self-motivate without external consequences: This isn’t choice, willfulness, or laziness. It’s neurogenetic executive failure. You can’t expect ADHD brains to motivate like neurotypical ones. If you put them in environments with no immediate consequences, they will fail. Your job is creating the right environment - immediate rewards, tiny chunks, external accountability. You provide structure that works with their brain, not against it. But you can’t engineer motivation that isn’t neurologically possible. Stop expecting them to “just focus harder.” Start designing consequences that actually work for how their brain functions.
