🪐✨ Voyager Saw Uranus' Rings In Hidden Dust Voyager 2 caught Uranus' rings from a geometry that made hidden dust stand out. NASA says the image was taken while Voyager was in the shadow of Uranus, about 236,000 kilometers away, at a viewing angle that let fine particles scatter light toward the camera. That matters because ring systems are not just neat lines around a planet. Most ring images favor bigger particles and cleaner arcs, but this backlit view revealed a continuous distribution of small grains spread through the Uranus ring system. That faint material matters because small grains can trace collisions, shepherding effects, and ring evolution, all of which would stay hidden if the camera only caught the bright narrow bands around the planet from a less revealing angle. The picture also carries the marks of the observation itself. A 96-second exposure made the faint lanes visible, while the long stare produced a non-uniform smear and trailed stars across the frame. The result is not a clean diagram, and that is the point. It shows a real outer-planet ring system where lighting, particle size, and viewing angle decide what can be seen, turning faint dust into evidence that Uranus' rings are more complex than their narrow outlines suggest. Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and has two sets of rings around its equator. The planet, which has four times the diameter of Earth, rotates on its side, making it different from all other planets in the solar system. Since Voyager 2 was the only spacecraft to ever fly by Uranus, astronomers currently rely on telescopes much closer to Earth, like NASA's Chandra X-Ray Telescope, to learn about this distant and cold planet that is made up almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. Now, listeners can hear the ice giant Uranus through the data collected by @nasachandraxray and the W.M. Keck Observatory. The data in this sonification reflects the amount of light detected from the planet and the orientation of its ring. Video description: Moving left to right, the scan begins with a cello that traces the arcing ring around the ice giant Uranus. The notes change to represent the amount of reflected light and its location on Uranus. The X-rays are heard as higher frequencies as the scan passes over the pinkish region of the planet. 😳 • J1407B: SUPER - SATURN. 🪐 • A newly discovered alien planet's ring system puts Saturn's collection to shame. The exoplanet, called J1407b, could even harbor at least one Earth or Mars-sized moon, judging by a large gap in the rings, scientists have found. This discovery marks the first time researchers have found this kind of ring system outside of the solar system. "This planet is much larger than Jupiter or Saturn, and its ring system is roughly 200 times larger than Saturn's rings are today," co-author of a new study about the rings Eric Mamajek, of the University of Rochester in New York, said in a statement. "You could think of it as kind of a super-Saturn." [The Strangest Alien Planets Ever]. Rings might be ancient, having formed with the planet itself. Or they might be relatively new, created from the debris of objects that fell toward the planet. Or maybe they form and then quickly disintegrate into moons. Saturn Is Not The Only Ringed Planet 😳 Hidden ring systems are drifting through the darkness around other planets across the solar system. 🪐🌌 Jupiter has rings. Uranus has rings. Neptune has rings. This. Changes. EVERYTHING. (We thought we knew.) Uranus, the planet of disruption and innovation, is officially moving into Gemini for the next 7 years, after a nearly 8-year stint in Taurus, and it will RADICALLY change our perception on and approach toward reality. FOREVER.👏🏼 #astrology #spirituality #horoscope #uranus #gemini

PUT THAT IN PERSPECTIVE 🤯 Saturn, renowned for its stunning rings and rich moon system, is a gas giant primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, while J1407b, an exoplanet located about 420 light-years away, surpasses it with a ring system potentially 90 times larger and a mass roughly 10 times that of Jupiter, suggesting vastly different formation processes and characteristics; both planets exemplify the beauty and diversity of celestial bodies, yet J1407b pushes the boundaries of our understanding of what gas giants can be, offering a glimpse into the complex dynamics of distant planetary systems.

Diamond rain is real💎 Not on Earth. On the ice giants Uranus and Neptune. Deep below the blue clouds, pressure and temperature rise to brutal levels. Simple molecules such as methane and other hydrocarbons break apart. Free carbon atoms snap into place as diamond crystals. The crystals fall like rain, sink for thousands of kilometers, and may build layers of diamonds over geologic time. This is not movie science. It is planetary physics. In laboratory experiments, researchers used high-power lasers to recreate the extreme pressures and temperatures expected inside Uranus and Neptune. In a split second the carbon inside plastic targets transformed into nanodiamonds. Those shock-compression tests match what models predict for ice-giant interiors. That is why planetary scientists now treat diamond rain as a serious process that can shape a planet’s internal structure and heat flow. Why this is shocking • The tops of Uranus and Neptune look calm and cold, but deep inside they are crushingly hot and dense. • Methane and related hydrocarbons dissociate under pressure. Carbon re-bonds as diamond. • Diamond grains precipitate and fall through the mantle like glittering hail. • This precipitation may help transport energy, affecting interior layers, viscosity, and thermal evolution. What it means Hidden processes can rewrite what we think we know about “quiet” planets. If diamond storms are possible on nearby worlds, what other extreme weather have we missed across the solar system and beyond? Sulfuric-acid clouds on Venus. Methane seas and rain on Titan. Rock rain on lava worlds like K2-141b. The universe is full of alien weather that still surprises even the experts. #diamondrain #uranus #neptune #icegiants #planetaryscience #astronomy #astrophysics #space #spacefacts #science #nasa #slac #natureastronomy #nanodiamonds #highpressurephysics #methane #hydrocarbons #planetinteriors #mantle #thermaltransport #alienweather #extremeplanets #solarsystem #spaceexploration #didyouknow

🌎 Saturn's rings are the most extensive planetary ring system in the solar system, spanning up to 280,000 kilometers in width but only 10–100 meters thick in most places. Composed primarily of water ice and rocky debris ranging from dust to house-sized boulders, the rings are structured into seven main groups (D, C, B, A, F, G, E) named alphabetically by discovery order.....🌕✨🪐 . . . . . . . . #Universe#stars#artemis #astronomy #nasa

The exoplanet J1407b has one of the largest ring systems ever discovered. Scientists estimate its rings may stretch up to about 180 million kilometers in diameter and contain around 37 individual rings with clear gaps between them. These gaps are believed to form as young moons grow inside the ring system. All current studies agree that J1407b’s rings are hundreds of times larger than Saturn’s, making it one of the most extreme ring structures known so far. #space #astronomy #j1407b #exoplanet #saturn #astrophysics #spacescience #cosmos #universe #science #facts #nature #knowledge
