A DIY van build doesn’t have to cost this much, but it can also cost wayyyyy more I had a few non-negotiables that definitely drove the price up (a shower and toilet), and a lot of things I didn’t care about that kept it down (like heated floors) At the beginning, I tracked every single expense in a spreadsheet - but in the heart of the build when I made 40 trips to Home Depot a week, I couldn’t keep up. By the end of the build I honestly didn’t know the total 🙂‍↔️ When I went back and added everything up later, I was surprised by how low it was My biggest tip if you’re trying to keep costs down: be really clear about what’s necessary for you. You can almost always add more later! ✨As we built our bus we kept track of all of our expenses on an Excel spreadsheet. -The bus was $4000 and we bought it in Pennsylvania from a guy that we found on Facebook marketplace. -The most expensive part of the build was the electrical system, which totaled around $10-$12,000. COST BREAKDOWN ⬇️ and just to keep it real my original budget was 25k for the entire setup. HA i bought at the height of the pandemic when everything was insanely priced. i had just spent the last 3 years doing up a 4x4 with an ex to travel in then we broke up right before we were due to leave LOL so I wasn't about to wait until the prices of vans went back down. $31000 - 2014 ford transit mid roof turbo diesel with 270000km she was absolutely empty inside, just a cargo barrier and flooring, which all got stripped. this van was by far the BEST van we looked at. the build - i did the build from scratch, and everything was custom built to suit my body, height, etc, but i had a LOT of help from my dad, some friends. i was lucky enough to be able to park my van at my dads work shed and utilise ALL their professional shop fitting tools on the weekend. Not to say this all didn't come with it's own set of struggles. $7734 materials - wood, gas box, fittings, sink, tap, stove, more wood, roof rack, bunnings trips. $1630 plumbing - water tank, custom bracket, pipe, fittings, hose, water pump, water filter, aluminium shield. $6137 power - i bought an @enerdrive_australia kit, 180w solar panel, with a 200amph lithium battery, 2000w inverter, and DC2DC, this cost also includes extra cables, power points, lighting. $500 bunnings - ngl this is a never ending expense and honestly there were so many trips i didn't note down so this figure is highly inaccurate not to mention all the updates ive done over the last 2 years. $1195 bushmans 12v 60L fridge - expensive but worth it. $186 toilet - used once and threw away. tell me what surprised you the most in the comments ⬇️ #vanbuildcostbreakdown #costofavanbuild
