I’ve shown a few different sides of Cuba but this one is likely the one you know most: it’s beautiful white, soft sand beaches. It’s the main draw for Canadians, who make up the majority of visitors to Cuba and especially Varadaro. We spent our second last day on a catamaran around Varadaro to head to Cayo Blanco where he had a lovely lunch, beach bummed out and danced a lil on and off the boat. I have to admit when we arrived in Varadaro, if I didn’t have the little access to the news I had, I wouldn’t have known a crisis was bubbling in Cuba. The resorts seemed full. The food, plentiful. And I think only one outage I experienced during a full week there. The sad reality is that the major hotels are or were at least generally well-stocked and taken care of. The locals don’t have much, it’s true. And the tourism industry doesn’t feel fully fair since to those visiting, Cuban resorts do illustrate that folks on the ground can be taken care of. And without the tourists, the locals who work primarily in tourism also lose out as they rely on their small paycheque and tips. So the hope is ultimately for a regime change but in the meantime, for fuel to be supplied, flights to resume and tourists to return in full form. Have you visited Varadaro?
