Talk about STUNNING 😍😍 5 White Sands National Park Hikes (in order of appearance on Dunes Drive) 1. Playa Trail: 0.4 miles easy 2. Dune Life Nature Trail: 1 mile easy 3. Interdune Boardwalk: 0.4 miles easy 4. White Sands Backcountry Trail: 1.7 miles moderate -> directly faces the mountains and is our favorite 😊 5. Alkali Flat Trail: 9 miles moderate -> we didn’t actually end up completing the entire trail because you can get incredible views throughout Hiking tips in White Sands: ☀️Sun exposure is real here. Try to hike in the morning or late afternoon if possible. The textures of the sand are best at these times anyway! 💦Make sure to pack enough water! 🥾The further you get along Dunes Drive, you’ll find larger dunes with less vegetation. A lot of the trails here are more guidelines with markings than true trails so have fun exploring along the dunes! We’d recommend downloading offline maps in case you get lost so you can navigate yourself back to your car. White Sands actually used to be a State Park and is one of the newest National Parks in the USA! 😍 This was captured during our New Mexico Road Trip at sunrise! ☀️ It was absolutely magical when the sky turned pink, the dunes were this insane golden color, and we had the park all to ourselves! White Sands is open to the public from sunrise-sunset, and we were able to watch the sunrise here because of our EARLY ACCESS PERMIT! We had to apply for the permit 14 days in advance, but I will say it was one of our favorite experiences here 🥹 Sunset was also absolutely stunning, but it was WAY more crowded! Last week I finally got the chance to visit White Sands National Park in New Mexico, one of the country’s newer national parks. Here are some fun facts about the park.

✨🏜️ SAND DUNES ONE HOUR OUTSIDE OF TEXAS // WHITE SANDS NATIONAL PARK ROAD TRIP FROM EL PASO 🚘✨ #TexasLoveList // These incredible sand dunes are only an hour outside of Texas! @whitesandsnps makes for an easy road trip from El Paso. 🚙 This place is 145,762 acres of white sands and literally feels like you’re in the movie Dune! ☀️ You can bring your dogs with you, and make sure to bring sunscreen and a hat because it does get hot! 🐶 🎟️ ADMISSION // $15 per person entering on foot or $25 per vehicle. 📍LOCATION // U.S. Route 70, Alamogordo, NM 88310 ⏰ HOURS // Daily 7AM-Sunset Add it to the Love List 💕✨

Here’s what you need to know about visiting this beautiful park: 🚗 White Sands is a 50 minute drive from Las Cruces ⏰ Park hours are 7 am to sunset; it closes 30 minutes after local sunset 🛷 Bring your own sleds for sledding on the dunes or you can buy them onsite from White Sands Trading Company 🎟️ Cost is $25 per vehicle and the pass is valid for 7 days; Interagency Passes are also accepted ⛑️ Be aware of the dangers of dehydration and heat exhaustion as there’s no shade on the dunes and temperatures can get extremely hot; bring tons of water, salty snacks, heat protection, a map or gps, and a fully charged cell phone Is @whitesandsnps on your New Mexico bucket list? Welcome to White Sands National Park, New Mexico. It’s one of the most beautiful places I have been to. Some facts about this NP 1. It’s the largest gypsum (soft sulfate mineral) sand dunes in the world 2. It has the largest collection of ice age fossil footprints in the world 3. The sand remains cool even during super hot summer days because it doesn’t absorb heat 4. It’s used for missile range by the military and when it happens, the park will be closed for short period and the park sits on one of the largest military bases in US 5. It became national park in 2019 Know before you go: 1. Best time to go is during non summer months 2. To get the best of lighting, go during sunrise and/or sunset 3. The park generally opens around 7 am and closes one hour after sunset but always check the NP website 4. The nearby town is Alamogordo where you can find accommodations I personally prefer sunrise after visiting around sunset the day before because you will get fresh sand ripples without any foot prints. White Sands, the good & the bad ⤵️ ⠀ PROS ▫️The scenery is STUNNING ▫️Far less crowded than most parks ▫️Family friendly ▫️Dog / pet friendly ▫️Very photogenic ▫️Easy to get around ▫️Loads of parking ▫️Super fun walking on the sand bare feet ▫️Facilities like bathrooms & picnic areas ▫️You can go sledding - so fun! ▫️Accessible boardwalk trail for wheelchairs & strollers, and beautiful views from the scenic drive ⠀ CONS ▫️In the middle of nowhere 😅 ▫️No major airports or cities close by ▫️No lodging or food inside the park ▫️Gets very hot during the daytime hours for most of the year and the park has limited shade ▫️Closes just after sunset (not ideal for photographers if you want to hike out far on the dunes) ▫️Limited signed / maintained trails to choose from ⠀ My overall rating for White Sands National Park 👉🏼7.5 out of 10 🤷🏻‍♀️ ⠀ That score is based off my experience traveling to 60/63 US National parks.
