Varroa mite are one of the biggest threats facing honey bees today and it’s something every beekeeper has to help their hives survive from. These tiny mites attach themselves to bees, feeding on their fat bodies and weakening their immune systems. But the real danger doesn’t stop there varroa mites also spread deadly viruses throughout the hive, often leading to colony collapse if left untreated. What makes them especially concerning is how quickly they reproduce. Despite the challenges posed by Varroa mite infestation sweeping through Australia, I’m grateful for the unexpected blessings it has brought. Sometimes we need to look at a negative situation and turn it into a positive to keep us going. Each hurdle has pushed me to become a better beekeeper and deepened my connection with fellow beekeepers from around the globe. Through sharing experiences and insights, I’ve trusted my judgment and learned invaluable lessons on how to help my girls navigate this tough time in a new country. Checking drone brood for Varroa mites is the best testing method, in my humble opinion. There is so much room for error when you do an alcohol wash. With an alcohol wash, you are gathering 300 bees out of a colony containing upwards of 50,000 individuals, and hope that you are getting a sample that is representative of the colony as a whole. Considering 80 to 90% of the mites are under the brood cappings greatly increases your chance of error. Sugar shakes are even worse. Do yourself a favor after you shake those bees in the powdered sugar and do an alcohol wash. You’ll see more mites are dislodged! If you think sugar shakes are more humane, think again. Those bees that you shook for 3 minutes in the sugar aren’t going to be very happy with the results!! I’d guess most won’t survive . (At least the alcohol wash is a quick death!! )Sticky board testing? No. And if you just “look” at your bees and you see mites? Your colony is already dead. However, if you open 100 drone cells, you can get an excellent idea of how many mites you have in your hive. You can’t just open the capping and look. Varroa mite is ripping through beekeepers from South Australia to Queensland. The problem is exploding. Ninety percent of the wild honeybee colonies on the east coast will be dead within three years — and those bees were doing eighty percent of the country’s pollination. Your fruit, your vegetables, your almonds — everything’s about to get hammered. There’s a fix. A cheap, simple cure: oxalic acid. It’s already used in the building industry, it costs next to nothing, and no Varroa mite has ever developed resistance to it. But the government won’t give it to beekeepers for free. One of the first signs of a red mite infestation is that you feel itchy after being around your birds. 🩸Red mites are tiny blood-sucking parasites that live in the chickens' environment. They can be a significant health risk, and in severe infestations, they can kill your birds! 🙋♀️ They will crawl onto anything warm-blooded in the hope of a blood meal, including humans or other pets. Oxalic acid vaporization treatments for varroa mite control - they're organic, safe, effective, can be done in cold weather, and cheap, if you have access to the equipment. Oxalic acid is present in veggies like spinach, beets, rhubarb, and sweet potato. In the hive, it dissipates over time, and does not penetrate or accumulate in beeswax. This is why it's considered organic. Some colonies already have capped brood at this time, which is why it's important to do a series of three OAV treatments, 5-6 days apart. You kill mites that are feeding off brood in open cells, then as batches of brood hatch with mites, you kill them before they can hide in cells that are being capped off. You only need one treatment if there's no more capped brood, since there isn't anywhere for mites to hide. I don't do alcohol washes which don't count mites in brood cells. I check the bottom board, and look for clues in the hive, like brood pattern, temperament, newly hatched bees that are small and malformed, and uncapping drone brood. Mites prefer feeding on drones due to their longer pupation period. If there is any level of mites, I treat the bees. If you wait until levels are high, the colony weakens, gets crabby, spreads mites, may swarm, viruses could reach your queen. Right now honeybee populations are still high if they survived the winter, but soon there will be a big die off as winter bees reach the natural end of their lives, causing the ratio of mites to bees to suddenly increase. They can't afford to lose the small amounts of brood being laid now to replace them. Mites can also shorten their lifespans, so there may not be enough nurse bees to raise a big population for gathering honey during the spring flow. Big colonies are better equipped to survive winter. I'll post equipment and process of oxalic acid vaporization treatment separately if you're interested. Maybe even if you're not! Deformed wing virus is fairly common now due to the varroa mite issue in hives. This little baby girl is infested at emergence, her wings did not develop properly and she will be rejected by the hive. Since it’s a virus, I decided it was better for me to remove her right away sadly, it’s hard. I do believe that bees in their short lives cycle constantly back into the hive as a tiny egg so that’s my condolence anyway.
