I’m convinced these are sold this way to get you to buy another once this one dies. I am a firm believer to buy plants where ever you can access them but if you’re looking for carnivorous plants ESPECIALLY Venus fly traps and you’re a beginner with them, save yourself the heartache and buy them from local nurseries or reputable carnivorous sellers online. Here some that I recommend: @carnivero @predatoryplants @california_carnivores VFT are one of the coolest carnivorous plants and they are awesome to own but they do need more specialized care and you won’t find that care in thee boxes. #venusflytrap #plantcaretips

Have you ever bought a Venus flytrap plant and killed it? Here’s how to take care of it. Light: Full sun to partial sun depending on where you live, like if you live in temperate weather then full sun is okay. These plants can withstand temperatures up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit and as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit but of course keep an eye out on them as if kept without water they can die or scorch from too strong sunlight. Water: They grow in bog like conditions therefore keeping them sitting on distilled water all the time during their growing season is most ideal. Reverse osmosis, distilled, or rain water only. Since it’s low in TDS levels. If you use tap water they will die. Soil: Most expert growers recommend using 1 part perlite to 4 parts peat moss. Or 1 part perlite to 1 part horticultural sand. Fertilizer: If kept outdoors you don’t have to worry about fertilizing it as it will catch some bugs. But you can also feed it certain bugs or use a well balanced fertilizer like the MaxSea fertilizer sold at California Carnivores website. Have you ever bought and killed one of these?

3 essential things you need to know in order to keep your venus flytrap happy and healthy! 1. Soil 🪨 Make sure you switch out the normal soil that usually comes with it to carnivorous plant-friendly soil. You can find it on Amazon or make it yourself! They need nutrient-poor, acidic soil, an easy DIY mix is 50% sphagnum peat moss and 50%perlite. 2. Water 💧 Flytraps can only be watered with DISTILLED or rainwater, as regular water will kill them. They also need to be sitting in a bowl of water to mimic the conditions of their native bog habitats. 3. Sunlight☀️ While they say they can be kept indoors, they thrive in direct sunlight. Make sure they are not in the shade and can soak up the sun! #venusflytrap #plants #distilledwateronly

What’s a Venus fly trap favorite genre of music? Trap music ☺️ Anyway, here’s an option for dormancy if you live in climates that are consistently below freezing. If you’re the lucky ones that don’t, then keeping it outside is perfectly fine during this time. If you see any consistent dips below freezing, then bring it inside until that cold front has passed. I have additional tips for VFT in my VFT highlight here too! #venusflytrap #carnivorousplants #venusflytraps #plantcaretips

Looking for more info? Read below! If you’ve ever bought one and watched it slowly turn black… you’re not alone. Here’s how to make yours THRIVE! 🌱 Full sun or Strong Lighting 🚫 No tap water, ALWAYS Distilled, rain, or RO water 🪴 Use the right potting mix, the one in the video is my recommendation, but theres many variations found online. 🪏 Pot size matters! 3” deep pots work well for young plants while a 5” deep or deeper pot is best for larger plants. VFT roots grow down! 😴Venus fly traps need a dormancy during winter months to thrive every summer! Its important to keep them in cooler temperatures and supply less water during this time. Depending on whether you want to make seed or not, you can always rip off the flower stalk and propagate it to get an identical clone of your flytrap in case it’s a cultivar! I usually do this as flowering also takes a lot of energy away from the plant and will need time to recover the big traps it once had. 3 Common Issues with Venus Fly Traps: 1️⃣ Sudden yellow or brown leaves can be caused by dry soil or nearby operating radiators. Always keep the soil moist as they’re bog plants! Venus Fly Traps can tolerate cooler temperatures down to around 10⁰C (50⁰F), so don’t worry about giving them warmth during the autumn or winter 2️⃣ Deformed traps are caused by persistent under-watering or too little sunlight. Dry soil must be avoided at all times for success as they grow naturally in bog climates across the Carolina states. After around six weeks of reliably moist soil, better growth should start to develop. To avoid future droughts, you can either keep the Venus Fly Trap submerged in water (around 20% in depth of the pot), or by planting it into a self-watering container like the video! 3️⃣ Finally, if you’re someone who manually feeds a VFT with dead flies, ensure they’re only around 1/4 of the size of the trap itself. Fly too big? The trap won’t seal and vital energy will be lost trying to digest it… • Interested in more Venus FT care? Do you remember this little carnivorous bog? It was such a fun build but also I was so scared that it was just going to 💀 I had not been able to keep pings alive or Venus fly traps. Now I can safely say….i know what helps them thrive! They have grown so much!!!!! The pings are huge now and the Venus fly trap has grown sooooo many big traps. One, they need a lot of sunlight. I know people say they shouldn’t be together because of different light requirements but these are happily living together. They are on an east facing window where they get direct morning light for about 3-4 hours and indirect light the rest of the day. Two, they like their waterings and they like it fancy 😂 I give them distilled water, they would also like love rain water but I live in SoCal and we don’t have any of that at all right now. I don’t let it dry out ever. There is a water reservoir at the bottom made of perlite, I make sure that’s always filled. The Venus fly trap recently bloomed, which was a clear sign of happiness. I got a lot of messages saying I should just cut it off. I do this with all of my plants, but I had never seen it flower so I just wanted to let it flower once, so I could experience it. It was lovely, but now that’s done. I cut off the stem of the bloom and will most likely cut them off in the future, although I don’t think it affected the growth of the plant at all. I am also happy to report that I have not had to feed them at all 😂 They are literally eating all on their own! I see bugs on there all the time! Sometimes we open the sliding door while the kids are enjoying the balcony and they forget to close the screen. We live next to a creek and we get lots of bugs (mostly moths) in our house sometimes. The flytrap and the pings are doing a great job at getting some of those for us. Overall, I think Venus flytraps and pings are definitely great companions and I am so happy this big is thriving. I’m just scared for when I have to upsize 😬 #carnivorousplants #carnivorousplants #venusflytrap #pingicula #plantlover #plantlife #plantythings #planttips #plantytips #plantcare
