First–Then is a simple visual strategy we use to help learners with autism understand expectations, reduce anxiety, and increase cooperation. ✅ What is First–Then? It shows two steps only: 👉 FIRST – the task that needs to be done 👉 THEN – what comes next (reward, break, or preferred activity) 🧠 How We Use It in Class 1. We keep it visual We use pictures, icons, or real photos instead of words, especially for nonverbal learners. 2. We keep it short and clear Only ONE task and ONE reward at a time. 3. ✨ Why Transitions Matter ✨ Transitions — moving from one activity to another — may seem simple, but for many children, they can be one of the hardest parts of the day. Shifting from playtime to cleanup, from the iPad to homework, or from one therapy task to the next requires: ✔️ Flexible thinking ✔️ Emotional regulation ✔️ Attention shifting ✔️ Executive functioning skills When children struggle with transitions, it’s not about “not listening” — it’s often about developing the skills needed to shift their brain and body to something new. In therapy, we support smoother transitions by using visual schedules, countdowns, first-then language, timers, movement breaks, and consistent routines. These tools help children feel safe, prepared, and successful.
