Something BIG has arrived at Richmond’s Virginia Museum of Fine Arts! 🎨 Last week, the @vmfamuseum debuted a special look at their latest featured exhibition, Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys. This exciting exhibition is an exploration of the profound and prolific contributions of Black artists to the field of contemporary art. The VMFA kicked of the unveiling with an exciting Giants Preview Party, giving guests a look at the approximately 130 objects of the Dean Collection, including iconic works of art by nearly 40 “giants” of the art world. Giants showcases the Deans’ commitment to supporting artists from 20th-century icons to younger artists who are advancing the legacies of those who came before them. I spent the evening with Kimberli Gant (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum) and Valerie Cassel Oliver (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, VMFA) the creative minds behind Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys. It was such an honor to witness the vision of bringing Giants to life- from inception to design, to the debut at the VMFA. The exhibit was beautiful, powerful, and so inspiring- showcasing over 130 works from 40 black artists from the Dean’s collection. Follow @vmfamuseum to plan your visit! It’s not every day you meet @aliciakeys and @therealswizzz! What a wonderful event previewing “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys” at @vmfa 💙⚓️🖼️

The GIANTS exhibit at VMFA was everything, but this was the moment I had to share. I finally saw an MPC 3000 in person, Swizz Beatz’s MPC 3000 on display. I had only seen it in photos, so being able to see the structure up close was dope. Back in 2020, I painted my rendition of J Dilla’s MPC as part of a Dilla tribute set for one of my collectors. That piece was my way of paying homage to J Dilla and the music he created through that instrument. Seeing the real structure in front of me had me thinking about process. When I created my painting, I built it one layer at a time, focusing on shape, shadow, detail, and intention, the same way sound is built through touch and timing. Moments like this remind me why I create. When you create from a real place, your work will always be in conversation with something bigger than you. Full circle. 🖤
