Hōkūleʻa is getting ready to relaunch the Moananuiākea Voyage! This is a 4-year journey around the Pacific which involves visiting 36 countries and archipelagos, nearly 100 indigenous territories, and more than 345 ports. Polynesian Voyaging Society President Nainoa Thompson recently sat down with PBS Hawai‘i to reflect on the early days of Hōkūleʻa and where he sees Hōkūleʻa 50 years from now. “You know, from my generation side, it’s not our kuleana to define that,” he said. “It’s young people’s need to define that.” To learn more, visit our website to watch “Hōkūle‘a: Star of Gladness.” The documentary produced in 1975 describes the construction of the canoe and the blessing ceremony for the launch at Kualoa that had not been seen in Hawai‘i for hundreds of years. “I want to sail… but I don’t want to arrive.” “I’m only going towards the one island … and it’s the planet earth.” Two quotes from Nainoa Thompson, the president of the Polynesian Voyaging society, which summarizes the profound week we spent in Hawaii filming the 50th anniversary of Hokulea, the voyaging canoe that revived the wayfinding techniques of ancient Polynesians, but in doing so, gave birth to so much more unity and cultural significance than anyone could have ever imagined. If you have been to Polynesia, or are simply curious about the history behind the voyaging society that migrated across the biggest ocean on earth, then this story is worth exploring. Hokulea was launched in March 1975 after the art of Polynesian navigation had arguably been all but lost. There was one man from Micronesia who was willing to share his knowledge of ancient celestial navigation, called Mau Piailug, and together with his crew were able to successfully navigate the canoe from Hawaii to Tahiti without instruments, to re-write the history books and initiate a powerful journey of ocean exploration for the following 50 years. The words of these wise voyagers bought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion, and maybe it will inspire you in some way as well. If there was ever a video of ours worth watching, this is it. ✨️ Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy needs to become a household name. ✨️ 💯 Every single person in the world should know about this incredibly talented group of mana wahines who run this organization. Their humble mission is to share our 'ike kupuna around voyaging. What they are really doing is building a nation. 📚 Not only are they in the classrooms and bringing community onto their wa'a, they are at every level of education elevating to the next level. It is unreal the amount of programming that we were able to pull off this last year from Wa'a Fest to FestPac and the thousands of haumana in between - Kanehunamoku was always there. 👑 We are part of their latest world domination schemes of training up more wa'a educators around our pae'aina. Voyaging on “the watery part of the world” has been a part of growing up in New Bedford for generations. Our Offshore Sailing Program is designed to build confidence, camaraderie, and leadership skills, as well as seamanship and navigation skills. Started in 2022, this program builds on the success of existing learn-to-sail and instructor training programs at CBC. It ties in to the CBC goal of developing capable, hardworking, personable young adults who are also ocean stewards. In late spring, students who have shown an interest are invited to come and practice after school, completing short sails on the 33’ Beneteau Figaro 2s. This training will hopefully allow some of the students to become watch leaders during the summer. This year, the Youth Offshore Team will be participating in several events, including the @marblehead_to_halifax Marblehead to Halifax and @idalewisdistancerace

What true voyaging blessings in Tokelau look like on its highest level🥺🇹🇰 I have no words yet besides the word blessed for what these past few days have been. And to dance fatele for and with the the Atafu delegation alongside Nukunonu and Fakaofo last night was such an honor!🙇🏻 So much to share in the coming days as we are headed back to Atafu this morning and will be out of service for the next day but… Fakafetai Atafu and all of Tokelau for blessing this voyager beyond anything I can put into words 💙

Refitting Elixir after sailing halfway around the world! It was a slog, but I’ve learnt so much, and I feel like I now know this boat better than ever. 𝘛𝘦 𝘒𝘢𝘢𝘩𝘶𝘪 𝘛𝘰𝘪 𝘰 𝘈𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘢 has a 85 member artistic kaahui at FestPAC. The theme for this 13th Festival is all about voyaging and regeneration “𝘏𝘰'𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘶 𝘓𝘢̄𝘩𝘶𝘪" our Maaori traditional Waka practises will take centre stage at the event, with Ngaa Toa Whakaihuwaka o Te Matatini, Te Kapa Haka o Te Whaanau a Apanui bringing our empowering haka and toi maaori magic to our Ohana. Other traditional Maaori arts represented in the delegation include taonga puuoro, raranga, whakairo and mahi uku. Contemporary Maaori and Pacific artists in the delegation exemplify excellence in many forms, including theatre, dance, literature, visual arts, and multi-disciplinary arts. Aotearoa has been represented at each of the four-yearly festivals since the inaugural event in 1972 and hosted in 1976.
