The power in vulnerability Today I was the student with a friend who was so beautifully reminding me of the power of vulnerability and why we feel the way we do when we are not fully received. Ultimately the only being that can fully receive us is ourselves and the more we receive us the more the reflection does. At points on the journey we have a blind spot that requires further understanding, attention, to free ourselves from the shackles of programs,and projections When we are ready we receive at the perfect moment what we need to further our expansion

Vulnerability builds trust, but there's a fine line between authentic connection and TMI. Here are 3 rules I follow: 1. Read the room Context matters. A finance meeting isn't the place for deep personal stories. Match your vulnerability to the setting and audience expectations. 2. Share scars, not open wounds Tell stories that have healed. When you share something you're still processing, emotion overtakes the message. Your audience feels uncomfortable rather than connected. Healed stories let you maintain composure while still being real. 3. Always include the lesson Vulnerability without purpose is just venting. Every personal story needs a clear takeaway. What did you learn? How did it change you? That's what transforms oversharing into leadership. The most powerful communicators know when to be vulnerable and when to hold back. 1. The No-Reaction Test (Emotional Control Check) Think of something that usually triggers you—anger, embarrassment, anything. Now sit still for 60 seconds with zero facial reaction. No expressions, no movement. • If your face or body reacts, you’re not in control—your emotions are. • Controlling reaction = controlling how others read you in real situations. 2. The Urge Control Test (Measures Discipline In Real Time) Keep your phone next to you with notifications on. For the next 2 minutes, don’t touch it—no matter what. Notice the urge building. • That urge = lack of control, not “habit.” • If you can resist it, you’re training real discipline. 3. The Eye Contact Test (Confidence & Control Check) Look into your own eyes in a mirror for 2 minutes straight. No breaking, no distractions. Sounds familiar? You might experience invalidation if you have gone through this. 1. Dismissal or Ignoring: When expression of your actual feeling is dismissed or rejected or met with indifference from your caregivers, your emotions are brushed aside leaving you feeling unheard. 2. Minimization: Your caregivers downplaying your experience or emotion telling you that you are overreacting or making a big deal out of nothing. This makes you question the validity of your own experiences and feelings. 3. Ridicule or Mockery: Your caregiver might have openly ridiculed or mocked your feelings leading you to experience embarrassment and shame. This can be deeply hurtful and damaging to your self-esteem. 4. Control and Suppression: Your parent may have exerted control over your emotions dictating how you should feel or expressing disapproval when you deviated from their expectation. This suppression fosters a sense of powerlessness in you. 5. Conditional Love: Your caregivers withheld love and affection until you conform to certain expectations. This conditional love gives you the message that your feelings are only acceptable under certain conditions leading to a sense of rejection. What can you do? Self validation; it is not just acknowledging but fully embracing your inner experiences, empowering you to navigate life’s challenges with authenticity and strength. HYPERVIGILANCE likely an adaptive coping skill you acquired when you were younger (and more vulnerable) Your ability to analyze and predict the moods + emotions of those around you became your superpower — think “I can read a room right away” energy But that superpower was really an attempt at detecting ‘danger’ as soon as possible so you could work to establish safety as soon as possible You learned to brace for impact, diffuse conflict, and/or run away at the first whiff of it. Exhausting. Overwhelming. And not your responsibility. You don’t need to carry their ‘superpower’ into adulthood. The mature + healthy people in your life will communicate their emotions— they won’t expect you to read their kinds or predict their needs. You’re safe. You’re loved. You belong. You don’t need the hypervigilance.

Direct, distract, or delegate when you witness someone in abusive relationship or dangerous situation. Direct: address the behavior head on Distract: shift focus and break up the situation Delegate: ask someone else to step in Believe the survivors in what they are going to and be a bystander to help prevent escalation.
