☀️🪟 What are ‘Wake Windows’? The length of time your baby is awake between each period of sleep. Apart from feeding and sleeping, ‘wake windows’ are the most variable factor depending on your child’s age. Getting this right can set your baby up for a wonderful relationship with sleep. We have all heard the advice: « Keep them awake during the day so they sleep better at night! » « Skip the last nap so they are really tired! » It sounds logical. But baby sleep is counter-intuitive. 🤯 Sleep begets sleep. A well-rested baby who naps well during the day will sleep heavily at night. An exhausted baby who skipped a nap will wake up every 2 hours looking for comfort. Why? Because sleep pressure needs to be balanced. If the pressure gets too high (overtired), the brain stays active and alert all night long. The baby in this video isn’t « lucky ». This baby is sleeping peacefully because they were put down at the exact end of their Wake Window. Not 20 minutes early (undertired = party in the crib). Not 20 minutes late (overtired = tears and wake-ups). Just right. ✨ When you nail this timing, bedtime takes 10 minutes, not 2 hours.
