Whenever I see a lone wasp queen, in this case, a queen Guinea Paper Wasp (Polistes exclamans), I usually tend to interact with them. I know it wasn’t the case, but it kind of looked like she was blocking and pushing my finger away with her hindleg! Wasp queens who have recently began the construction of their nests, at least from my experience, always tend to be very passive and docile. There are no workers yet to protect her and to defend the hive, so queens rarely ever see a need to risk their own lives to protect what little they have. If you look closely, you can see the pearly-white eggs she’s laid in the cells of the nest! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! Just listen to the sound of the beating wings from this queen European Hornet (Vespa crabro)! Despite multiple wasp species having the word “hornet” in their name, the European Hornet (Vespa crabro) is one whose name fits appropriately to what they truly are. They are North America’s only true hornet species. True hornets are wasps that are found only within the genus (Vespa), and there’s approximately 22 species of hornets in the world. These big beautiful wasps prey on a variety of different insects, such as flies, honeybees, grasshoppers, and many more. In return, this helps balance and keep insect populations in check. They will often strip trees and shrubs of their bark to feed on the sap that’s inside. European Hornets will also use the bark for constructing their large nests. Known for being a type of social wasp, theses wasps live in colonies of up to 200-500+ members! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! #wikitermes #cupim #termites #termitas #entomologia #insetos #insect #entomology #rainha #queen #realeza #royal #zoologia #biologia

I can’t help but notice how this wasp looks eerily similar to that of a species of tarantula hawk! This large sleek looking insect is what’s known as a Great Black Wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus). These wasps are parasitoids of primarily katydid species, but will also parasitize grasshoppers as well. After mating, female Great Black Wasps fly out in the search of a katydid. Once a female has found one, she immediately stings it several times. The venom from her stings leaves the katydid completely paralyzed. The female will then drag her paralyzed prey back to her underground burrow that she dug out prior. Once underground, the female Great Black Wasp will lay a single egg on the body of the katydid. After hatching, the tiny wasp larva will begin to feed on the paralyzed katydid. The female will then fly out and gather several more katydids or grasshoppers to feed her larva. After the larva has acquired enough nutrients, the larva will pupate and will eventually emerge out of its underground burrow as an adult Great Black Wasp! Because the venom of this particular wasp species is specialized to incapacitate katydids and grasshoppers, the effects it has on humans is extremely mild. I was hopeful that it would at least have a little kick to it, but it was pretty mild overall. *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio!
