And yes… we’re still sharing moments from that same day with Gerry. 🐋🤍 This little whale stayed with us for a long while. Not because we asked — simply because he chose to remain nearby. One moment he was under the boat, the next he would disappear… and then return again like nothing had happened. At one point he surfaced beside the panga and almost looked like he was giving a big smile to @leahephoto and @madisonpinn . The reactions on the boat said everything — Pure joy.

Sometimes a whale comes so close that you don’t just see it — you understand how it lives. In this video, a gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) reveals its baleen — not teeth, but a filtration system made of keratin. During feeding, whales take in huge volumes of water and sediment, then push the water out with their tongue, trapping small crustaceans inside. But here’s the key: in the lagoons of Baja California, gray whales are not feeding. They come here to give birth and raise their calves in warm, protected waters, largely free from predators like orcas  And this is where one of the most remarkable phenomena in marine biology occurs: “friendly whales.” Gray whales actively approach boats, sometimes lifting their heads and even allowing human touch. Crucially, every interaction is initiated by the whale — never by people.  Even more fascinating, this behavior appears to be cultural. Mothers bring their calves to boats, effectively introducing them to humans. This tradition has been observed across generations and is almost unique to these lagoons.
