Did you catch the third baseman? This is how NOT to cover third base. 1. Don’t stand behind the bag. You won’t be able to reach the runner. And the ball has to travel further (like what we saw in the video). 2. Don’t straddle the bag, runners can bump into you. Instead… 1. Be in front of the bag. 2. Pick a corner. Third Baseman: Momentum is your friend At third base on plays outside of slow rollers, you have the luxury of taking your time when making a throw. When moving at full speed in any direction, if the internal clock allows, you can regain positive momentum towards your target and take your time to make an accurate throw, while also closing the distance between you and first base. When receiving a ball at a standstill, again if the internal clock allows, restart your shuffle, or even run into a shuffle to gain full positive momentum and close the distance. I often see a lot of young third baseman struggle with this concept. Intimidated by the perceived distance of their throw, most throwing errors at 3B come from rushing. When more often than not you can slow your body down, or even take the time to close the distance and allow your momentum to carry your throw. If you can develop a better understanding of the timing it takes to play third base, throwing errors should be nonexistent. Dropped Third Strike Rule If the catcher doesn’t catch the third strike cleanly and: First base is empty, OR There are two outs, the batter becomes a runner and can try to advance to first. If first base is occupied with less than two outs, the batter is automatically out. 3rd Base Coverage - Throws From the Outfield ✨ The biggest thing with covering third base is to stay out of the base line! We don’t want to get caught by an obstruction call because we’re in front of the bag. This is also why I don’t like straddling the bag. Straddling also makes you vulnerable to the slide and (in my opinion) at a disadvantage for a throw off target. ✨Third basemen, you also have to watch out for wrap-around slides that make it difficult to tag. Make sure when you drop down the tag, you keep it on the runner. ✨Keep the ball in front of you! In the event of a low throw, you should prioritize keeping it in front over the tag. This is because if it gets by you, the runner is most likely going to score. What else did I miss? POV: 3B Edition ⚾️ 👀 Eyes behind the baseball — As a third baseman, it’s crucial to see the ball all the way in and get your eyes behind it. This helps you read hops, stay through the ball, and avoid picking or stabbing. The better you track, the more consistent you’ll be. ⬇️ Stay low and athletic on your prep step — Your pre-pitch movement sets the tone for every play. You need to be in a low, strong, and balanced position so you can react quickly to any ball, whether it’s a rocket down the line or a slow roller. The lower you are, the more time you buy yourself. ⚡️ Develop a quick, efficient release — At third base, you don’t have the luxury of extra steps. Every tenth of a second matters. Work on fielding the ball clean, getting into a strong throwing position immediately, and delivering accurate throws on the run or from different arm slots. Third base is known as the “hot corner” for a reason. You have to combine fast reactions, smooth footwork, and a strong arm to make plays look easy.
