With the news of Joann Fabrics closing all their stores I understand some people are worried about being able to color match their thread to their fabrics in person. I recommend getting a thread chart that will help you color match at home if you need to get your crafting and sewing supplies online. For historical costumers and cosplayers this is a very useful sewing tool. I bought this Gutermann thread chart from @wawaksewing which is where I also buy a lot of my thread, but there are also thread charts for other brands and from other shops. #sewing #joann #cosplayersofinstagram #historicalsewing #costuming #fabricstore #diy

Oh no - She’s cutting up threads again! (must be time for another school workshop). 🤣 These spools of thread are well past their use by date. They are at least 20 years old and to be honest we’re not a great quality to begin with. When I try using this thread in a sewing machine they just snap and shred like crazy so they are not suitable for machine embroidery any more. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be used! You just need to get creative. I do an activity in my school workshops that I call ‘scrap thread bowls’ - and like the name suggests, they require a lot of little thread scraps to make them. The school students don’t often have a heap of thread scraps on hand, so I provide them. And these old brittle threads that are no longer any good for machine embroidery make perfect ‘scraps’. Cutting them up is also super satisfying to watch. #threadscraps #sculpturalembroidery #meredithwoolnough

Thread shredding mid-stitch with no obvious reason? It might be time to go burr hunting. 🕵🏻 Tiny nicks from needle strikes (aka burrs) can hide in your bobbin case, hook, or needle plate- and they *will* mess with your stitches. Try the thread or the nylon fabric test (pantyhose work great!) If you feel a snag, that’s your culprit. ✨ A quick buff can buy you time, but replacement is your long-term fix. Want more simple ways to keep your machine sewing smoothly? I’ve got tips for days. Come hang out.
