Talk about STUNNING 😍😍 5 White Sands National Park Hikes (in order of appearance on Dunes Drive) 1. Playa Trail: 0.4 miles easy 2. Dune Life Nature Trail: 1 mile easy 3. Interdune Boardwalk: 0.4 miles easy 4. White Sands Backcountry Trail: 1.7 miles moderate -> directly faces the mountains and is our favorite 😊 5. Alkali Flat Trail: 9 miles moderate -> we didn’t actually end up completing the entire trail because you can get incredible views throughout Hiking tips in White Sands: ☀️Sun exposure is real here. Try to hike in the morning or late afternoon if possible. The textures of the sand are best at these times anyway! 💦Make sure to pack enough water! 🥾The further you get along Dunes Drive, you’ll find larger dunes with less vegetation. A lot of the trails here are more guidelines with markings than true trails so have fun exploring along the dunes! We’d recommend downloading offline maps in case you get lost so you can navigate yourself back to your car. White Sands National Park, the world’s largest gypsum dune field, is celebrating its 5th anniversary as a national park this week. This park isn’t new, however. It’s been in the NPS system since 1933 when it was declared a national monument. And it contains the oldest record of humans in North America- fossilized footprints that are believed to be 21-23,000 years old. When you visit, the closest town with lodging is Alamogordo. And note, this is one of the few national parks that closes at night. The park gates close 30 minutes after local sunset, and reopen at 7am. One day in the park is plenty of time to: Check out the Visitor Center. (Don’t miss the fossilized footprint exhibit) Drive the 8-mile Dunes Drive. Take a hike (Not recommended in the heat of the summer) Go sand sledding. (Waxed snow saucers work best and can be rented or purchased at the park’s gift shop.) If you're seeing white or pale sand, here is the science behind it: 🧱 The Rock Type: White M-sand is typically crushed from high-quartz content rocks (like granite or limestone) or marble. If the original stone lacks iron or other dark minerals, the resulting sand will be light in color. 🪨 The "Clean" Factor: Unlike river sand, M-sand isn't mixed with soil, silt, or clay. A pure, washed crush from a clean source will naturally appear brighter. ⚙️ The Dust Factor: Sometimes, the absence of fine dust particles can make the sand appear lighter. In contrast, sand with a high dust content often looks duller or dirtier. The Verdict: A lighter color often indicates a very high silica (quartz) content, which is excellent for strength and durability in concrete!
