Blue Star Fern tips & tricks! ⬇️ 1. These rainforest beauties appreciate a space with humidity, no draughts, and bright, filtered light. 2. They enjoy an evenly moist potting medium HOWEVER, similar to other plants they are susceptible to root rot so only water when the top 3cm of soil has dried out. 3. The fury ‘feet’ you see above the soil is where they produce new growth from, so don’t cover them up with soil! 4. When you re-pot, keep the majority of fury ‘feet’ above soil to promote thicker growth. 5. A liquid fertiliser provides plenty of nutritious goodies - we like to use Superthrive GROW (available online) as it provides a balanced diet for all your indoor plants. ⭐️ Fun fact: these ferns are epiphytic! This means that in the wild they will attach their long-creeping rhizomes (fury feet) to trees rather than the ground - this is why they love a well-draining potting medium when grown indoors. Look out for a potting mix that has pumice and bark; these two ingredients provide great drainage. A front porch isn’t quite complete without ferns billowing in the wind on a warm spring/summer day. Fern Hacks: 1. Remove fern from the plastic pot it comes in from the nursery. I’m convinced it’s suffocating and needs breathing room. I like to use metal hanging baskets with coconut liners. 2. Last year I experimented with Alaskan Fish Fertilizer. I added 4 tsp to a gallon of water every 4-6 weeks and the result was amazing. However, fish fertilizer STINKS! 🙊 A friend told me (who was told by an Amish gardener) that by adding 2 tbsp Epsom to a gallon of water and spraying the mixture on ferns monthly, will result in beautiful green ferns. Epsom salt contains high levels of micronutrients that helps plants grow, produces more flowers, and increases chlorophyll production which makes them greener. 4. Ferns prefer moist soil and regular waterings. Tip: if the weight of a basket/pot feels light, it likely needs water - water until it leaks from the bottom. 💦 5. I like to hang my ferns about 24” from the ceiling. I bought 10” chains from the hardware store, so they hang just above eye level. I personally just think it looks better. 6. Ferns prefer dappled sunlight.
