Being outdoors has always been a big part of my life and my secret to staying warm in Iceland is our wonderful wool. 🐑 We Icelanders we use these sweaters as the outermost layer in both summer and winter. It’s a very local thing :) and I understand why many of you have been asking about them. It has given me this belief that our wool could get a new life and function also outside of Iceland. Especially if you love the outdoors. I’ve slept on mountains in Norway and hiked in Nepal and while everyone else complained of a cold night, I didn’t. Because of course I wore my Icelandic wool sweater. 🥰 But everyone has told me, that’s crazy. Iceland is the most expensive country in the world and going into clothing production here and using Icelandic wool doesn’t make any sense. Especially in the fast moving clothing world. But I have a vision and some strange believe in this. That maybe people will believe in the Icelandic wool like I do. Because it’s been my number one go to material for keeping warm in a crazy place like Iceland. Many don’t know this, but back in the 60’s and 70’s Iceland was a big clothing manufacturer and shipped machine made garments from wool outside of Iceland. But most of these factories closed down. Because how can we compete with cheaper fabrics? Can we bring this back? I have no clue. But I’ve had this itch to try. Also to bring more colours into the Icelandic wool, because the clothes we made back then were full of colours. Old brochures that I found, just confirmed that. That we used to have colours and creative patterns. 🥰 exactly how I had envisioned it.
