“I keep being given MORE work, but I’m at capacity! What do I do??” The reality is that being assertive & saying “No” at work could completely backfire, especially if it’s your manager or boss. It may not reflect well on you, especially if that person isn’t aware of your task load (and let’s face it, they very often aren’t). So… what are you supposed to do? Well, a great way to approach things when you’re at capacity with priorities and deliverables is this: 1️⃣ Positive first response This demonstrates you’re enthusiastic and want to help. e.g. “Of course I’m happy to help…” 2️⃣ Make the person aware of what’s currently on your plate. e.g. “I’m already working on X and Y which you asked for me to deliver tomorrow. To get this new task completed today, which of the other two tasks can I deprioritize?” Ask for support. You don’t have to try to juggle it all yourself. Now, it’s a different story if being over-loaded is the norm, or the expectation is that you just ‘get the job done’, meaning you’re having to put in extra hours because you’re constantly at capacity. If that’s the case, you want to raise it with your manager - it could be that you’re having time management challenges. Or if it’s a matter of unreasonable expectations it may serve you to actually look for a role elsewhere. (It’s worth noting that there are some industries *cough* the legal industry *cough* where it’s often expected that you’ll just get the job done, no matter how late you have to stay, in which case this approach will not work.
