As we get to the end of the 13th year of Plantpassion, i just wanted to mention sustainability….. it’s a term that often has negative connotations at the moment. associated with greenwashing, or having to give up things, of having less, or less choice. But this year has proved to me that by living by my sustainable values, by only working with those that understand, . By changing what i do as I learn more, I am healthier, happier, and working with nature to grow more flowers becomes easier. Our wreaths show this - we’ve only used locally grown ingredients, from our willow and cornus bases, our different textures of conifers, our foliages and our dried and fresh decorations (including edible chillis on this one) and by moving away from wire and ribbons or baubles, everything can be composted after Christmas. I know i’m not the only one who thinks this is pretty sensible, as i’ve sold more than ever before. Which of course has made Plantpassion more profitable than any previous December, and means I can plant some more hipping Roses to decorate future Christmas decorations. Sustainability doesn’t have to mean less. Thirteen years in, i’m learning that doing things thoughtfully and seasonally isn’t a compromise - it’s a strength. Thank you to everyone who’s chosen a Plantpassion wreath this year and helped prove that sustainable choices can also be beautiful, joyful and abundant. Where are my fellow skinny-wreath lovers at? 😏 I have a confession: I can’t buy a frame. I have to forage my own. 🌿 There’s just something about wandering the woods, searching for just the right twigs, and seeing what might twist into something airy and elegant. The key? Keep it slender. My signature skinny frames were born from this obsession. One day, off I went into the woods with some curiosity and a little stubbornness. A few experiments later, I had my thin braided willow design - strong, flexible, and way prettier than anything I could buy! Since then, I’ve gotten a little wild with materials: young maple, alder, apple, and of course willow! Most green shoots are pliable enough to shape, yet rigid enough to hold form - even with only a few strands. Favs for skinny frames: 🍃 Alder 🍃 Oemlaria 🍃 Apple 🍃 Grapevine 🍃 Curly willow 🍃 Willow Tips for your own foraging adventures: • Try different seasons - many shoots are softer in the late summer and fall before frost, some (like willow) are more supple after it ❄️ • Long pieces = less tying = more elegant curves ✨ • Colour matters! Reds, yellows, soft browns… mix & match 🌈 • Coppice your own shrubs to grow long, straight stems perfect for weaving 🌿 This asymmetrical wreath features curly willow around a strong central piece of grapevine, and I’m loving the soft, wild lines it creates. 💬 Who else gets a thrill from foraging for frames?
