Why is this becoming more and more common on bolted abseil anchors around here? (This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this!) The original lower mallion was starting to show signs of wear so instead of replacing it someone has decided to add two mallions to the top bolt instead. I’m not really sure how that makes sense? Perhaps I’m missing something? I’m pretty sure (like 99.9%) it’s always better to abseil off the lowest bolt rather than the highest bolt in a vertically placed anchor that is backed up by cord (which is very common in the alps and unequivocally never as good as having chain linking the two bolts together). I’d love to know the reasoning behind why this was done like this. TFW you forget your belay plate (and everything else on your harness). Not sure it’s a tech tip since I wouldn’t recommend the carabiner break abseil to anyone. Glad I remembered how to do it after some trial and error 😂 Also shoutout to @oberland.guide who did the 16 abseils off the Grand Cap using this method after we climbed the Bonatti route and he also didn’t pack a belay plate (or climbing shoes).
