Let’s talk about advanced reader copies and the book resale market… I first got into ARC reading and collecting during Library Science school, but it wasn’t until I started a bookstagram/joined some book sale groups online that I really got a better sense of just how big the ARC trading market is! Though I always wish I had more trades myself, I think trading among collectors is such a great way to tailor your collections and share ARCs you don’t want to keep with others who will love them more. What I think is significantly LESS great are bookish influencers who get ARCs from publishers and dump them straight on resale websites for hundreds of dollars!!! 😤😭 ARCs are given out for free in exchange for a fair and honest review, and are NOT intended to be resold (especially not before the book has been published!!) While I don’t fault collectors for buying these if they have the funds, I do wish book sellers would think twice about posting these for sale! The book reselling market in general gets SO prohibitively expensive sometimes, and even though I understand market value may be different from the original sale price, it sucks to see people inflating prices just to turn a profit! Are you an ARC reader? ARC Books, or books sent out to readers before they officially release, are not Free books. Yes readers may not have to pay money for them, but there is an exchange of the book for the reader's time spent reading, reviewing and promoting the book. When it comes to ARC books they are vital in helping an author, especially an Independent author, to have a successful book launch! It is a way to help build up the hype of a book before it officially releases and help more readers see it. If you sign up to be an ARC reader please only sign up if you know you will have time to read and review the book. I know when I first started Bookstagramming I signed up for every ARC opportunity I saw. Not only did I quickly burn out but I also just didn't have the time to enjoy the books as much as I wanted to. Be sure you take the time to read through the ARC forms to know the book will be a great fit, you are aware of the timelines and what is expected before signing up.
