Three major types of vehicle transmissions: 1. Manual Transmission How it works: Uses a clutch and gear shifter operated by the driver. Power is transferred from the engine to the gearbox through the clutch. Different gear ratios are manually selected by engaging gear pairs. Gear lever: Shown with positions (1–5 forward gears, R for reverse). Features: Simple construction. Lower cost and maintenance. More control for the driver. Requires skill to operate. 2. Automatic Transmission How it works: Uses a torque converter instead of a clutch. A set of planetary gear sets automatically change ratios. The system selects gears based on vehicle speed, throttle input, and load. Gear lever: P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), D (Drive). Features: Smooth and easy to drive (no clutch pedal). More complex and expensive to maintain. Heavier and less fuel-efficient compared to manuals (though modern versions are improving). 3. CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) How it works: Uses two variable-diameter pulleys (primary and secondary) connected by a belt/chain. The pulleys change their diameters to provide an infinite number of gear ratios. This keeps the engine at its most efficient RPM. Gear lever: N (Neutral), Z (a mode for CVT, like low gear), D (Drive), B (Brake engine mode). Features: Provides seamless acceleration (no gear shifts felt). Very fuel-efficient. Smoother ride. Limited towing/power capacity compared to traditional transmissions. ✅ Summary: Manual = Driver control, cheaper, requires skill. Automatic = Easy to drive, planetary gears, less efficient. CVT = Smooth, fuel-efficient, uses pulleys, no traditional gears.

Recently we put out a video about use of neutral in automatic transmissions and there were a lot of people who said the information was wrong. We promised you that we will get clarification from a credible authority on the topic and hence we reached out to Mr. Veluswamy - President, Automotive Technology and Product Development at Mahindra and Mahindra. We had filmed our video in a Mahindra Thar and hence there couldn’t have been a better person to explain this. The final verdict is while it’s ok shift to neutral, it’s always safer to shift to park mode for long stops as it is better at preventing roll back on gradients. Do also note that, leaving in drive mode does in fact increase transmission temperature.
