#Bcd Binary Coded Decimal Explained

DIGITAL LOGIC SERIES: BCD Counter - How to convert our 8-bit counter to BCD Counter - by using an extra NAND Gate. So an 8-bit counter will count from 0 to 255. What if we want a BCD Counter? BCD stands for Binary Coded Decimal. So we want our counter to count from 0 to 9. How do we accomplish this? We can use a NAND Gate and then use the (1s and 8s bit place) as inputs to our NAND Gate. When both bits are (1) going to our NAND inputs, the NAND Gate will output (0), which then goes to the Active Low Reset of our 74LS163 counter chip. (Note: We didn't use an AND gate, because the output of an AND Gate will be (1) if all inputs are (1). The LOW output of our NAND gate then resets the counter chips to 0000, then starting the count again on the next clock cycle. Of course, we actually just need a 4-bit counter to create a BCD Counter (0-9). But let's say we want a counter that will reset when it reaches, say 200 count, or 128 or some other value.
