Collage became an integral part of my creative practice. It allows me to see an image in a clear, structured way, with a definition of shapes, values and colors. This process adds a layer of complexity to the work.

I’ve made it almost 9 months creating a #minicollage each day using a curated set of #collagepapers taken from my stash that marches whatever is on the page-a-day #artistsalmanac calendar. It’s been a really fun project and i’m thrilled at the variety of the collages-much more than I’d ever do on my own. This bog #handmadebook from a huge old italian dictionary has also grown into a big baby in the past 9 months too! One of my favorite tips is to use vintage and antique papers to wipe off my brushes. You end up with so many unique and interesting collage papers to use in your paintings, collages, and mixed-media works. I like to use pages from vintage books, but you can use any sort of paper or scrap cloth you have lying around. It’s a great way to find a new life for things you might just throw out, and you’re not wasting any paint. Have you tried this out before? So, are you wondering what I am using here on my gel plate? Is it something special that is causing the paint to move? Here’s the secret: It’s WATER! Just plain tap water, nothing else! When you try this technique make sure to roll out a THIN layer of acrylic paint on your plate and that the paint is still WET when you apply the water. You can spray or drip it on. Then the waiting starts. First it takes a while for the water to do its magic trick and then it takes even longer for the water to dry. Depending on the amount of water it might take over an hour 🫣 and the paint needs to be really dry before you can add the pick up layer! But I think it is absolutely worth the wait, I LOVE that texture! What do you think, yay or nay? Happy Friday, happy weekend! Stenciling an old thesaurus for collage papers!

Looking for a fun and unique way to make collage art? Use a gel plate! This is one of my favorite creative mashups. Here’s the process: Start by gluing bits of collage papers - magazine clippings, gel prints, painted scraps - onto a sturdy base like cardstock or watercolor paper. Don’t overthink it! Just layer, glue, and enjoy the process. Then, once it’s dry, take that collaged base and print on top of it using your favorite gel plate techniques. You can use stencils, masks, or just roll on some paint for texture and depth. Next, cut your sheet into four smaller pieces. Each one will be its own spontaneous, serendipitous little collage. You can even keep going and add more collage layers on top if you want - there’s no wrong way to do it! This method is perfect for breaking creative blocks, loosening up, or just trying something different. I love how every piece ends up being a surprise.
