Whenever I create a small collage, I think of this formula: 3 neutral vintage papers + 3 papers from one color palette. I call it the 3+3 formula. But art isn’t math — and I’m definitely not a mathematician (maybe you aren’t either). This formula can guide you, not limit you. It helps prevent overload… but it’s not a rule. The answer is: PLAY. Play with colors, shapes, patterns, paper. Combine complementary colors, repeat the same hue in different forms, explore textures — there’s so much room to move! Keep the formula in the back of your mind, but stay open. Break it, bend it. Make it personal. Make it yours. I said it before and I'll say it again - painted paper collage is an INCREDIBLE way to have fun in your art again. I haven't done it in a while (big sad) but really need to get on it again! It really was so fun, and taught me a lot about letting loose and experimenting when it comes to art! So here's a vintage reel of mine to get us both hyped to make a creative mess! (Anyone here remember the foot flower incident that happened while I was filming this reel in 2022? 👀 I'll share about it in stories if you're curious hahaha ) Here are some of my favourite parts about painted paper collage: ✂️ Messy paint marks to make textured papers, and the messier the better! And it doesn't really matter if you are technically proficient in painting! You're just messing around! ✂️ A very free and experimental process where you can basically see the finished product before committing to glueing anything down. ✂️ If you're like me and very impatient it really forces you to SIMPLIFY and STYLISE which are skills that are great to bring into all your art tbh - not just because it's so fun! But yeah, I don't wanna cut out details, so this really forces me to just accept simpler shapes which often means I experiment more! Have you ever tried painted paper collage?
