This video took me a while to decide what to do with. I don't like videos where coppers get hurt, but I also know we can find training points in everything. Also, its never easy to pick up on a determined person that is planning to ambush you. They are usually very compliant, very strategic and thoughtful about their moves. I speak a bit about understanding how relaxed, calm and compliant he appears to be. It seems that the cops knew something was off about this guy. The biggest take aways for me. Pre-Violence Indicators. He is indexing. He has a visible straight object on his right side that he is indexing on. Eventually, and quickly in the interaction, he pulls out a knife. Officers hands in or on their vests. A huge pet peeve. Our reaction times are already slowed by brain friction and our own reaction abilities. Let's not add to the time of our response by putting hands in our vests or in bad positions. Very happy the coppers involved are ok and no one was seriously hurt. Share. Comment. DM.

The 🔪”Intercept” Concept: Defense against an “ambush” or surprise Knife attack. Most often, the intercept strategy is based off a concealed weapon in the waistband or front pants pocket of a suspect. Or, very often it could be addressing a concealed hand (typically right hand) in the front pouch pocket of a hoodie sweatshirt or jacket. But we also see suspects with concealed knives in the inner breast pocket of a jacket. As long as the principle is trained of pinning and capturing the weapon-wielding hand, the outcome should still be successful. In this case, we talk about intercepting the weapon hand before he can withdraw the knife effectively from that upper torso/breast pocket area. UOF experts often discuss a 45 degree elbow flare being an indicator of a weapon being retrieved from a concealed position on the body. When it comes to retrieving a concealed weapon from a breast pocket of a jacket, there is still a distinct elbow flare, although it might not accurately be called “45 degree.” There are many ways of dealing with a surprise edged-weapon attack. Control the hands. “The hands hurt us.” We say it, now train it. Outside arm control limits movement and shuts down resistance before it escalates. The cuffing moment is where most assaults happen, the line between freedom and restraint. I prefer hinge cuffs. Less wrist movement, more structural control, better tension management under pressure. HAMMER LOCK ARM EXTRACTION OPTION If a suspect wings their arm down or pulls it in during an arm extraction attempt the hammer lock arm extraction option is very effective at overcoming this type of resistance. There are several ways that suspect can try to tuck, hide, and prevent their arms from being placed behind their back.
