When fields are sprayed with pesticides, it doesn't just kill pests—it wipes out the fireflies' food source. Since adults only live for a few weeks, if one generation fails to reproduce, the next year is left empty. ​Fireflies also face a silent enemy: asphalt. They need grass and moist earth to lay their eggs, but when meadows are replaced by parking lots, they lose their only nesting grounds.
