Beef tallow in beauty: is it the game changer we are all looking for in our skincare? ​ ​Sounds a lot like coconut oil over a decade ago. You know when all the natural beauty companies were pushing coconut oil as the cure all. And we all found out it wasn’t! ​ ​There’s so much to say about the topic of tallow. It’s very nuanced. As an esthetician I’ve noticed a trend towards simplifying skincare which I’m all about. I truly don’t think you need 10 products to have great skin. You need a skincare routine that you’re consistent with. ​ ​However, what I’ve seen over the last 10 years specifically in clean beauty is this wave towards simplifying for simplicity sake. This is true when it comes to tallow. Let’s use tallow for everything- it cures acne, eczema, dermatitis, rosacea- it does it all. And while I’m not here to argue that it may have helped your skin for a time- there’s a lot more that goes into someone’s skin response to a product. ​ ​I teamed up with skincare specialist, @grittybeauty to write a post that breaks down tallow and why it may not be the best for your face. She’s an acne expert and has helped so many women find true freedom from their skin. Skin that is acne-prone produces excess sebum which overwhelms the skin’s vitamin E supply, increasing the load of oxidative stress which can destabilize topically applied triglycerides, such as Tallow. ​ ​Several brands tout the benefits of its saturated acids such as Oleic, Stearic, and Palmitic acids; however, they are bound within Tallow’s triglycerides, rendering (pun intended) the fatty acids useless. ​ ​What are your thoughts on tallow? ​

I had to edit this video so much to get it under 90 seconds. There's so much more to say! 🎥 The main takeaway is that we think tallow is tallow. But is an egg that is from a chicken that lived its life in a cage and never seen the sun the same as a chicken eating its natural diet foraging outside? One is a healthy thriving animal and the other is not. In many ways tallow has been commercialized in the same way. 🐔 It's both surprising because tallow is so amazing! However, the quality in the overall market is getting diluted. Companies, even if well intentioned, are taking shortcuts in the name of being more like the skincare products (odorless and white) that they claim to be the opposite of. 🤔 I'm not saying I like smelling like a steak, no. Rendering tallow for skincare is an art. And after years of rendering traditionally, I have developed many special techniques to minimize the smell of beef. 🥩 I have never heard a customer say my tallow smells like beef or something unpleasant. It does have a more natural scent though. 🌿 As for the non-white color, I embrace this too! If your skin is dry and breaking out then it’s a barrier impairment. A simple oil is rich in these. So much of our skincare contains this. RISKS: Beef tallow can go rancid very easily. It is literally the grease that sits at the bottom of your pan after cooking a roast. It’s hard to clean. There are people online having skin reactions to this now. People who are selling or praising beef tallow aren’t aware of their skin type or condition and are saying this is suited to acne when it’s not suited. Acne is an overproduction of oil. Adding the most occlusive fatty barrier will actually promote the condition. Those who have seen an improvement with beef tallow don’t have acne. They have a dry impaired barrier. There is a difference. If you risk putting rancid or untested skincare on ANY open or broken skin you can open yourself up to skin infections.
