My giant tree fern nearly died 4 months ago, now I’m worried it might outgrow my house! 😱 It had no leaves on it in December, but when I started watering the trunk every day it responded with 5 giant new fronds. Then I got rid of my dining room table so it could live under a skylight - now it has 4 more fronds on the way … a total of 9 GIGANTIC fronds. They delivered it so fast and the guys who dropped him off were so friendly and helpful, thanks so much guys! When I saw this guy I couldn’t believe how much of a bargain it was, so let me introduce Richard (all of tree ferns have names based around their Latin name - Richard for dickie for Dicksonia). He now joins Dickson and Artie! We have a collection now, and I have to dig another hole now for Richard! Moving him into the jungle garden was a good workout that’s for sure!! Before you plant a tree fern… watch this.. Tree ferns aren’t like normal garden plants — and if you get this part wrong, it simply won’t thrive. In this video (Part 1), I’m showing you exactly how i plant a tree fern... ✅ Why you should lay it down first ✅ How to prepare the hole before lifting it ✅ How deep to plant it (this is crucial) Tree ferns only grow around 2–5cm per year… which is why they’re so valuable — and why you need to get this right first time. They prefer moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter (think compost, leaf mould, or woodland-style soil). Best position is sheltered, partial shade, protected from strong winds. That said — I’ve got some in full sun, they’ll still grow, you just need to water them a lot more to keep them happy. By popular demand, I have put together a little Tree Fern Care summary for those of you living in the uk and thinking of investing. Covering them for the winter isn’t that much of a big deal, it takes no time at all BUT what does take time… time and planning is the constant watering in the summer months. I water twice a day when it hasn’t been raining… sometimes 3… holding the hose in the crown for a good few minutes. I actually enjoy it. But going on holiday is a bit of a pain 🥴 I always pray for rain if I’m away… sorry about that! The big one here is about 50 years old, they’re slow growers so yes they are costly. This chap was £300 ish.
