It’s the time of year where everything in the garden needs a dose of fertilizer to get them going. Here are some quick tips to help you fertilize successfully. 1. Apply fertilizer at the drip line- doing so allows the plants to receive the fertilizer in the area that they need it most. Avoid placing fertilizer directly on a plant or too close to the plant as this may damage the plant. 2. Plants growing in shade require less fertilizer than those in sun. Plants in the shade have a lower metabolic rate than those in the sun. If they are planted under a tree they will need more fertilizer as trees compete with the plants underneath for nutrients. 3. Plants that are planted in sandy soil require more frequent fertilizing as sandy soil leeched the nutrients. 4. Fertilize only during active growing season. Fertilizing during off months is a good waste of resources as potassium and nitrogen are not actively being absorbed and simple leached out of the soil. ****Bonus tip Use the right fertilizer for the job. The most important and first thing you need to understand is what the nutrient makeup of each individual fertilizer is and what purpose they serve to the growth of the plant. NPK stands for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K)—the three primary nutrients in most fertilizers. Each one supports a different aspect of plant growth: Nitrogen (N): Promotes leafy green growth and is essential for photosynthesis. Great for lawns, leafy vegetables, and plants in their vegetative stage Phosphorus (P): Supports strong root development, flower and fruit production, and overall plant vigor. Important for blooming plants and root crops. Potassium (K): Enhances overall plant health, disease resistance, and helps regulate water and nutrient movement within the plant. When you see a fertilizer labeled with numbers like 10-10-10 or 5-10-5, those represent the percentage by weight of each nutrient in the order of N-P-K. For example, a 10-10-10 fertilizer contains 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 10% potassium.
