Teacher to a single mom to five kids through foster care and adoption 😅 That’s a big transition. Never would have imagined that my yes to foster would have lead me here. Let’s drop the whole “special” thing. It burdens foster parents with both a credit and a pressure we don’t deserve and shouldn’t have to carry. And it allows everyone else to exclude themselves with the admission that they’re not “special.” Let’s level the playing field. Kids need homes and families, and they need average people to open their homes and families. Sure, it takes personal work & learning & a whole lot of grace. When I had my daughter I was worried I’d have to give her back to DHS. We aren’t the same. No seriously, I have postpartum anxiety that my biological child wouldn’t get to be mine forever. Being a foster parent is wild. And ALWAYS worth it. #fostermom #fostercare #childwelfare

No one tells you this when you become a foster parent…but I will. ❤️Love isn’t always enough. Attachment takes time and sometimes it looks messy. 💔You will grieve regardless of the case’s outcome. Even when reunification is right. Even when adoption is possible. Love doesn’t cancel out loss in either scenario. 💛You’ll parent differently than your friends. Because trauma-informed care means connection over compliance, and that makes your approach different than most. 🖤You’re co-parenting with the government. And that system doesn’t always prioritize what’s best for the child, you’ll have to fight for it and you might lose. 💜You will never see the world the same way again. And that’s a good thing. It’ll break you open in important and impossible ways. 💙If you’re in it, I see you. If you’re considering it, ask questions. Whenever people ask me about fostering, 90% of the time, people will say in some way or another that what keeps them from doing it is that they would get “too attached.” Every time it is said, I get a flood of thoughts. First, I wonder what they think it is I am doing haha? Just raising a baby with some level of detachment? Honestly, it’s impossible to not get attached. I treat each baby that comes into my home just as if I birthed them. So am I too attached? I guess. Did I know that would happen? Yep. Haha. But then I remind myself what people must really mean by it. They don’t really think there is a way to do this without getting attached. And what they are really saying is that they don’t want to deal with the inevitable heartbreak. Which I get. Life is hard enough without inviting more of it into your home. I hate that part of all of this. Even when the baby I care for goes somewhere safe and loving, it hurts. When the system fails them, it is heartbreaking. But where would this sweet baby be if nobody opened up their full heart and home to them? Where would we be if we hadn’t ever met them? So I guess what I am saying, if your only fear is getting too attached- maybe this really is for you ;)

Something about foster care that most people don’t realize… Sometimes the doorbell rings and suddenly there’s a four-day-old baby in your arms. No pregnancy. No anticipation. No baby shower. No casseroles on the porch. No tiny outfits dropped off. No one offering to take your other kids so you can rest. And that’s not because people don’t care. It’s because foster care lives in the unknown. No one knows if this baby will be here for a night, a week, a month—or longer. So life doesn’t pause the way it does when you bring home a baby you’ve been carrying for nine months. And then one day you look up and eight months have passed. This baby has lived her entire life in your home. And you realize she didn’t get those early moments of community the way your biological babies did. And that can feel heavy. But somewhere along the way, you learn to build that community quietly. Inside your walls. With your husband. With your children. With the love you show up with every single day. And you realize— it may look different, but it’s still enough. We’re enough.
