10 things I wish I knew when I first moved to France 🇫🇷 1. Everything feels hard at first. Even the smallest things. Buying ANYTHING, opening a bank account, mailing a letter… it all feels like a constant uphill battle. 2. You don’t know as much French as you think you do (at least this was the case for me). You’ll have to push through embarrassment, confusion, and silence before words finally stick. 3. You’ll feel personality-less (as I call it). Like you’ve lost the version of yourself who could be funny, confident, or charming in your own language. 4. Bureaucracy will break you a little. There’s always one more form, one more document, one more person who says “ce n’est pas possible.” The secret is politely pushing back and insisting that “oui, c’est bien possible”. 5. You won’t make friends right away. Relationships in French culture take time. You’ll feel lonely at first, but once they let you in, they’re friends for life. 6. You’ll miss everything about home. Birthday, hugs, small talk in your own language. And when things go wrong, you’ll crave home more than ever. 7. Cultural differences show up in conversations, in silences, in how people value time, emotion, connection, and how people express warmth or distance. You only notice once you’ve already changed too. 8. You’ll cry. A lot. Moving abroad is not for the weak, and some days the loneliness hits harder than you ever imagined. It’s a totally valid feeling. 9. You’ll realize you no longer belong fully anywhere. You’re too French for home, too foreign for here. And that’s okay… because maybe belonging isn’t a place, it’s a feeling you build over time. 10. You begin to carry home with you, in your heart, while learning to love the life you’ve built abroad 🥰 France 🇫🇷 You’ve made me cry, made me laugh, and made me see the world, and myself, in a new light. You made it all worth it.
