Does Neuroscience Research Support EMDR Therapy? In 1987 Francine Shapiro stumbled upon the potential therapeutic effects of eye movements while walking in a park, she noticed that eye movements appeared to decrease the negative emotion associated with her own distressing memories. Intrigued by this observation, she conducted further research to eventually develop what we now know as EMDR therapy. This therapy is based on the premise that psychological distress is often due to disturbing experiences that have not been adequately processed by the brain. The therapy involves the patient recalling distressing images while receiving one of several types of bilateral sensory input, such as side-to-side eye movements or hand tapping. This process is thought to facilitate the brain’s natural adaptive information processing mechanisms, helping the individual process and integrate traumatic memories. And more recently neuroscientists have started to investigate why this technique is so effective, examining its impact in terms of brain functionality. What they have found is that during EMDR, the brain enters a state similar to deep sleep. This state is crucial for processing and storing memories and the EMDR technique actually increases the power of a naturally occurring low-frequency rhythm in the brain’s memory areas. Which in turn helps different parts of the brain communicate better. It’s now thought that during EMDR the increase in these rhythms causes the receptors on nerve cells that hold the fear memories to effectively turn off. Ultimately causing the memory to lose its fear charge. Making it just another memory, without the extreme emotions attached to it. So does neuroscience support EMDR? The answer is yes!
