In today’s session, we worked on functional language and real-life object use. The therapist placed different objects in front of the child and asked: • “I want to cut fruit — what do we use?” 🍎 • “I want to clean my nose — give me what we use.” • “I want to eat rice — what do we use?” 🍚 This is not just naming objects. This is teaching understanding, reasoning, and daily living concepts. Many autistic children can label objects… But functional use and WH-question comprehension require structured intervention. Unchallenged behaviour does not dissolve. It calcifies. In classrooms. in teams and in leadership. What we ignore becomes normal. What we tolerate becomes culture. Challenging behaviour is not harshness. It is clarity and clarity protects learning. If you work with ECTs or lead a team, this is the quiet work that matters most. What we walk past… we permit. Small things become big things. Ignored… repeated… normalised. The brain wires what it repeats and groups copy what goes unchecked. Silence gets interpreted as approval and challenging behaviour is not about control. It is about culture and culture protects learning. So save this for when you are tempted to let it slide.
