The key to getting this look is to use frames with a large matting. Here are the specs for my gallery wall: -Frame size: 27&3/16” x 27&3/16” -Art size: 10”x10” -Style: Ashford, satin black -Matting: 8.5”, smooth acrylic -Wall height: 8’ -Distance between frames: 2.75” left to right, 2” up and down -Distance gallery wall is from the floor: 19.5” -Distance gallery wall is from the ceiling: 20” -Photos: landscapes, scenery and buildings I took from our travels -Photo printing: I had them printed as 11x14 photos in black and white. I have the photo overlap on the backside of the matting. I taped the photos to the matting -Securing the frames: I hung them using nails. Tips -go 18x18 or bigger -your frames should take up a half to two thirds of your wall -1-2 inches in between each frame -if your gallery wall takes up the whole wall make sure the center (height wise) is about 60 inches -if above a console or couch there should be 6-8 inches in between top of furniture to bottom of frame -center sconces height wise! How to Create a Perfect Gallery Wall 1. Plan Your Layout: Arrange a variety of frame sizes on the floor in a long rectangle shape. Mix landscape and portrait frames until it feels balanced. 2. Order & Prepare Photos: Decide which photos go in each frame. We ordered poster prints for the larger frames. Make sure the photo orientation matches the frame. For a cohesive look, we chose black and white prints. If using color, stick to a similar palette. 3. Fill & Test: Place all photos in their frames, then lay the frames on the floor again. Adjust spacing until it looks even. 4. Measure & Mark: Measure the total length and height of your layout. Transfer this to your wall using masking tape as a guide. Use a spirit level to keep lines straight, this will help everything hang perfectly. 5. Prep Frames: Apply Command strips to the back of each frame. This makes hanging easier and keeps frames from slipping or getting wonky when cleaning. 6. Hang the Frames: Start with the corner frames, aligning them with the masking tape. Work along the edges first, then fill in the gaps in the middle. 7. Final Touch: Remove the masking tape and step back… admire your new gallery wall! Thinking about doing a gallery wall? Here’s what I wish I knew before I started. Mine isn’t finished — not even close — but I’ve picked up a few tips that might help if you’re starting one too: 1. Pre-plan your layout with the frames you already have. 2. Mix sizes and shapes of frames to keep things visually interesting. 3. Stick to 2–3 themes — whether that’s color, subject, or style — so everything feels tied together. 4. Keep your frames somewhat consistent. I used frames that all have a touch of metallic. 5. Add something personal and unexpected. Mine’s an 1890s English brass ornament and Wedgewood dishes. 6. Use museum putty to keep frames straight. 7. Look beyond art stores. I’ve found great artwork in calendars, vintage books, and printable downloads. 8. Buy your frames secondhand. Antique shops, thrift stores, and Goodwill usually have better character — and better prices. 9. Take your time. It’s not a one-and-done project. I’m still adjusting mine.
