Why containers? Easy to maintain, no weeding, controlled soil, controlled moisture… oh, and fun. Lots and lots of fun. Here are my top tips to get your garden up and running—scratch that—up and growing. Boxes: I had these custom made and designed them myself to my specifications. They’re built from CA redwood, which is an excellent choice because it resists fading and ages beautifully. If you’re growing food, make sure you’re using untreated wood so harmful chemicals don’t leach into your plants. For reference, this box is 3’ x 6’, 3’ deep, and raised 21” off the ground. Soil & Rock: Drainage is key. Make sure your boxes have drainage holes and are raised at least 2” off the ground. This one uses slats to allow water to pass through. Start with a layer of rock (I like large marble rock—about $4/bag at Lowe’s). Then alternate equal layers of gardening soil and potting mix. Keep going until you’re about 4” from the top. Give it a light mix with a trowel—you don’t need to be obsessive. The potting mix adds great nutrients, while the gardening soil helps with drainage. Plant: This planter might look a little sparse now, but trust me—in about three weeks, it’ll be bursting with squash, strawberries, and peppers. Not sure how much to plant? I highly recommend the book Square Foot Gardening. It’s been an indispensable resource for me over the past 10 years. Gardening is one of the only hobbies where failure isn’t just expected—it’s guaranteed. That’s part of the magic. It’s all trial and error. It doesn’t matter the space available or your budget, you can start growing your own food in any space using cheap materials! Start small and don’t make it overcomplicated but enjoy the process and experiment with what you have! VERTICAL GARDEN MATERIALS: - 8 x 5L bottles (plastic type 2 - HDPE) - Drill - 1 x drill bit 35 mm gauge - Hammer and nail - 1 x expanding wood trellis - Vermiculite - Compost mix - Straw NOTE: make your own version using any material available and have fun growing your own food using a small space! HANGING CONTAINERS MATERIALS: 2 x plastic bottles (I used 5L bottles) Pyrography pen Compost mix Natural Twine Seed or Plant STEP BY STEP GUIDE: - Cut the top of your plastic bottle - Remove the cap and make holes for drainage over the top part (neck) of your bottle - Make 4 x holes around the top part of the body of the bottle opposite to each other - Make 2 x holes at the bottom for drainage (keep a 3-4 cm gap from the bottom) - Put the neck of the bottle upside down inside the body of the bottle - Fill up with compost and plant your seed or plant - Cut 2 x natural twine pieces of the same length - Run 1 piece through 2 x holes of the same bottle and 2 x holes of another bottle and repeat on the other side #gardening #gardeningtips #verticalgarden #growyourown #smallspacegardening

Scratch that...up and GROWING! - Boxes: I had these custom made and I designed them myself to my specifications. They are made from CA redwood which is an excellent material because it has minimal fade and it ages beautifully. Make sure you are using untreated wood if you're planning on growing food in your boxes so harmful chemicals don't taint your vegetation. The dimensions of this box are 3' x 6' by 3' deep and raised off the ground by 3') - Soil & Rock. Make sure you have drainage holes. This box is designed with slats that let the water through. Start with a layer of rock, I like large marble rock (4.00/bag at Lowes). Then I alternate in equal portions starting with one layer of gardening soil then one layer of potting mix. Keep alternating the gardening soil and potting mix until you get 4" from the top. Mix them together with a trowel but you don't need to be obsessive. The potting mix gives GREAT fertilizer and the gardening soil provides excellent drainage. - Plant! This planter might seem sparse right now but trust me in about 3 weeks it will be busting with squash, strawberries and pepper plants. Unsure of how many plants to plant in one space?
