My Best Garden Hack… I absolutely LOVE my container garden and every year I have a different theme and create something different! I do it all on a budget and over HALF of this container garden has been in the same pots for years! Here are my top tips for creating one ON A BUDGET: 🌱 Grow from seed. I grow lots of annuals myself so I save money. One of my pots might cost me 10p in seeds! 🌱 Buy plug plants. Any annual bedding plants I buy early in the spring and keep them protected from frost. They arrive as teeny plug plants and it’s the cheapest way to buy them. 🌱 Take cuttings and divide perennials. Any perennials I have in the garden or I love in anyone else’s garden I take cuttings of. ALL the perennials in pots are were propagated. 🌱 DON’T waste compost. If a pot is done I remove the dead plants, shake off ALL the excess soil into buckets where I add garden soil, fish blood and bone powder and mix in some fresh. FEED your soil don’t waste it. Perennials and shrubs in pots I mulch just like I do my garden! Under this decking is concrete! There was so soil, no life and no garden! You can grow a garden anywhere! 🌷Comment below if you’d like any of my links sent to you 😘 MEMBERSHIP- Join My Beginner Gardening Club COURSE - Buy my ‘Beginner Gardener Course’ BLOOMZ- FREE Dahlia Grow Along STORE- My Amazon Storefront BORDERZ-Buy my ‘Borders For Beginners’ Course POTZ- Buy my ‘Container Gardening’ Course GROWALONG - FREE seed grow-a-long COLLECTION - My seed collection Follow me @lookinsidemygarden for: 🌸 Daily gardening on stories 🌱Beginner gardener tips 🪴 Grow alongs ✨ Garden transformations 💕Life, laughs and community #gardening#gardeningtips#garden

“I’m just bad at gardening.”🪴 Not true—you’re just trying the hardest method. Container gardening looks easy, but pots dry out fast and leave little room for error. It’s not you. It’s the pot. The fix? Start with herbs. They love containers, bounce back from neglect, and make your whole kitchen smell like summer. Want an easy win? I’ve got a Herb Garden Guide to get you started. ✨ Comment HERBS and I’ll send it your way!

Why containers? Easy to maintain, no weeding, controlled soil, controlled moisture… oh, and fun. Lots and lots of fun. Here are my top tips to get your garden up and running—scratch that—up and growing. Boxes: I had these custom made and designed them myself to my specifications. They’re built from CA redwood, which is an excellent choice because it resists fading and ages beautifully. If you’re growing food, make sure you’re using untreated wood so harmful chemicals don’t leach into your plants. For reference, this box is 3’ x 6’, 3’ deep, and raised 21” off the ground. Soil & Rock: Drainage is key. Make sure your boxes have drainage holes and are raised at least 2” off the ground. This one uses slats to allow water to pass through. Start with a layer of rock (I like large marble rock—about $4/bag at Lowe’s). Then alternate equal layers of gardening soil and potting mix. Keep going until you’re about 4” from the top. Give it a light mix with a trowel—you don’t need to be obsessive. The potting mix adds great nutrients, while the gardening soil helps with drainage. Plant: This planter might look a little sparse now, but trust me—in about three weeks, it’ll be bursting with squash, strawberries, and peppers. Not sure how much to plant? I highly recommend the book Square Foot Gardening. It’s been an indispensable resource for me over the past 10 years. Comment “garden” below and I’ll send you the link, along with a few of my favorite starter items. Most importantly, know this: You will fail. Gardening is one of the only hobbies where failure isn’t just expected—it’s guaranteed. That’s part of the magic. It’s all trial and error. But I’ll tell you this… a tomato has never tasted as good as one picked fresh off the vine, grown by your own hands. Go forth, water frequently, and get to gardening. You’re going to love it. Most people think more pots mean more impact - but it’s often the opposite. A dozen little containers dry out faster, look cluttered, and never really thrive. If I can, I always go for as big a container as possible. It holds more soil, so roots grow deeper and stronger. It stays moist longer - meaning less watering. And it instantly gives structure and focus to a space. This big pot of dahlias, salvias and friends is a good example - the container’s doing half the work. So, my advice would be - skip the army of tiny pots if you can. Go big, and let your plants do the talking. #PetePlants #containergardening

Just because you live in a small space or apartment doesn’t mean you can’t grow your own food. When we were in our apartment, I learned to maximize every inch—and season after season, we made it work. Here are a few tips to help you grow where you are: - Use Raised Beds or Grow Bags If you have the room, raised garden beds (especially ones elevated off the ground) are ideal. No space? No problem—grow bags are just as effective and perfect for small patios or balconies. - Think Vertical We built a simple pergola and used it to create vertical growing space. Hanging gutters and planters worked beautifully for strawberries, herbs, and flowers. Just remember: shallow planters dry out quickly, so water regularly! - Maximize Railing Space Don’t overlook your railings! I built a small platform to hold grow bags in the sunniest spot. You can also find railing planters that attach right to the spindles for even more growing potential. I hope this inspires you to start where you are, with what you have.
