Today, on International GIS Day, we’re highlighting the essential role geographic information systems (GIS) play in shaping effective conservation measures and deepening our understanding of rapidly changing ecosystems. This data visualization from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio tells the story of how drastically sea ice coverage has changed over a 20-year period in the Central Arctic Ocean—a region crucial to Arctic ecosystem health and global climate regulation. From big data analytics like this to participatory mapping projects, our resident marine geographer, Melissa Turner, guides the Oceans North team in drawing on spatial information—in tandem with Indigenous and local knowledge and scientific research—to inform policy recommendations to governments and empower the communities and partners we work alongside. This software is QGIS, an open-source GIS tool used for mapping and spatial analysis 🌍 The points you see are a shapefile of meteorite impact craters around the world. My master’s thesis was all about mapping. I spent up to 14 hours a day for 4 months doing nothing but maps. I was a bit disappointed because I couldn’t do any fieldwork; it just wasn’t possible at the time with the amount of mapping I had to do. It was exhausting… but I actually enjoyed it. It’s crazy how much information we can get remotely, just from satellite imagery 🛰️ #geology #maps #GIS #stellite #impactcraters . . . What about you, do you like maps and mapping ?
