Here is why I never buy grass-fed beef in the grocery store. Most people buy grass-fed thinking it is better. But here is what nobody is talking about. In 2016, the USDA quietly deleted the official definition of the term grass-fed. That is the moment the label stopped meaning anything. And the beef industry knows it. In the final three to six months before slaughter, the majority of cattle labeled grass-fed are moved to feedlots. There, they are fed something called DDGS, dried distillers grain solubles. DDGS is the waste byproduct of ethanol production. It is what is left after corn is fermented into fuel. The cattle are kept sedentary to prevent fat burn. They are fed this cheap, high-calorie waste product to maximize rapid weight gain. The result is heavily marbled, tender meat from a sedentary, metabolically stressed animal. The nutritional profile is completely different from a genuinely pasture-raised animal. Here is the one thing you need on the label. It must say 100% grass-fed or 100% grass-finished. If it just says "grass-fed", it legally means almost nothing. Also look for American Grassfed Association certification, which includes verified third-party auditing.
