⚠️What to know about HIKING HALF DOME 🏞️ 👉SAVE for your next trip to Yosemite National Park! We had the amazing opportunity to summit Half Dome and it was the HARDEST hike we’ve ever done 😵‍💫 And **one of the most dangerous in America 😱 So here’s what we brought, and everything you should know before hiking 🥾 Our ending stats of hiking Half Dome were: 🚶‍♀️18.5 miles, 5350 ft of elevation, and 12 hours of active hiking with a total of 14 hours on the trail 🚶 WHAT WE BROUGHT: 💦 @gregorypacks 3L hydration packs + 1L water bottle (plan to drink 4-5L of water!!) ⚡️Gatorade (or other electrolytes like @drinklmnt to replenish your body during and AFTER the hike). 🧤Sticky gloves for the cables 🌞@rei Sahara sunshirt (+ sunscreen) @cotopaxi hat, and a rain jacket for Mist Trail (@patagonia) 🥪Lots and lots of snacks 🌿Trekking poles (optional) WHAT TO KNOW / OUR EXPERIENCE: 🏞️Half Dome is not an easy hike, and the cables are STEEP with a 45° incline (but we definitely think it gets steeper). You 100% need prior hiking experience. 🎟️You MUST have permits to summit sub-dome and half dome! We lucked out and got permits for our groip during the daily lottery since we did not get them months in advance. 💰Fines for hiking w/o a permit are: $5000 and/or 6 months in jail. 🧤NGL, the cables were nerve racking BUT easier than we thought. It took 30 minutes to go up the cables, and everyone is so kind, patient, and understanding. Take your time! 💪Climbing the cables requires more forearm strength than you think! Highly recommend having sticky gloves to help with stability (and overall comfortability). You can also bring a harness. 💦We went up the Mist Trail in the beginning to see Vernal and Nevada Falls. On the way back we took the John Muir trail which is 1.5 miles longer but way easier on the knees. Half Dome was as equally rewarding as it was hard but so glad we did it! 📍Half Dome Trail, Yosemite National Park (not pictured: the way DOWN 😵) Nothing can describe the feeling staring at half dome knowing you need to climb it after already hiking 7 miles with 20 Ibs on your back. To put it simply, its terrifying. Youll find yourselt praying to god that the grip on your gloves will stick, the old railing will hold, and your arms wont give out on the vertical climb to the top. If youre lucky, you wont get stuck in a traffic jam on the way down. The Half Dome cables are officially down for the 2025-2026 winter season, typically remaining on the ground from mid-October through late May. While no permit is required, the climb is even harder than usual. Proper gear and comfort on such terrain is essential but today lots of people had the prusiks ready and were climbing on!

You have to do this hike at least once in a lifetime. Such a magical experience. We arrived at the base of Half Dome very early on, with the sun trying to make its way above the mountains behind, touching nothing but the summit. It’s a tough climb, and pretty dangerous as there is nothing to clip into as you climb the extremely step incline. But it’s a pretty incredible experience to stand on the ledge and look down into one of the most famous National Parks in the world.

I remember the first time we did this, I was pretty gripped. So, it was so fun to come back and feel super comfy on the cables & complete it in a way faster time!! We are both wearing @columbia1938 Omni freeze long sleeve shirts to stay cool & their Blackcomb Ridge 18L daypacks. I also loved the Tellurix Titanium OutDry hiking shoes for this!! Super grippy & kept me feeling comfy on the slick granite. Total stats: 16 miles 6,000 feet of gain 7 hours I honestly don’t want to “recommend” this hike during the off-season, because it can turn life threatening very quickly. Always do plenty of research & make sure you know how to use your gear before the hike. A 60 second video on IG will never be able to cover the nuance & proper gear use here. You can get permits to do this hike when the steps are in & it will be a much more straight forward & very unique experience!!
