I’m flexible in a lot of my perspectives in higher ed, but these are some of the hills I’ll die on. What are yours? 🤔 - Grades are an outcomes assessment. You can try your best but it doesn’t mean you deserve a 4.0. - Equity is sometimes being used to add more work without the systems to support it. And no, this isn’t about excusing low effort from some faculty…it’s about not overburdening the people actually doing the work. - “I suffered, so they should too” is the most common (and imo dumbest) philosophy in higher ed. - Grades are way too inflated today, and we are confusing completion with what should be mastery. - Doctoral students aren’t being adequately trained to know all the different career options, and too many advising models are still built for a single academic pipeline that no longer reflects reality. #highered #professorlife #hottakes #academiclife #gradschoolproblems

Greetings from Tokyo with some reflections on Japan’s view of a changing world 🚀🇯🇵 I’ve spent the past few days meeting colleagues across government, academia, and the private sector. A few powerful takeaways: 🇺🇸 Japan is increasingly exposed to the erosion of the U.S.-led order. For decades, the U.S. has been Plan A for Japan’s security — with no real Plan B. 🇨🇳 China is viewed as an existential challenge. Rising tensions around Taiwan are reshaping Japan’s strategic thinking in real time. 🇪🇺 Europe matters more than we think. Japan hopes Europe will go beyond being “just a market” and play a stronger strategic and security role in the region. 🌏 From 10,000 km away, the fracturing of the international system feels even more tangible. After 23 incredible years teaching at Arizona State University, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the future. Perhaps it’s time for a new challenge and a different shade of red and blue. Right now, I’m reflecting on the thousands of students I’ve taught and the memories we’ve made together. In many ways, this decision hasn’t been easy, but growth sometimes means stepping outside your comfort zone. Looking forward to what’s next… even if it means heading south to Tucson. Fierce rivalries aside, education always comes first. Obviously this will surprise a lot of people, but life is full of unexpected turns. Only time will tell what this next chapter brings. Nursing, physical therapy and other graduate students may soon face new federal loan limits under a Trump administration proposal. The plan would classify some healthcare degrees as non-professional programs, reducing how much students can borrow. A local physician tells me this could make it even harder to fill critical healthcare roles in Southern Nevada.
