COOL VIBRATIONS The infamous EG6 from Initial D is one of the most memorable cars in the series, not because it’s the fastest, but because of how it’s driven. The car is a Honda Civic EG6 SiR, driven by Shingo Shoji of the Night Kids. Compared to the powerful Skylines and RX-7s that appear in the story, the Civic is a lightweight front-wheel-drive hatchback. On paper, it shouldn’t be the most intimidating machine on the mountain. But Shingo changes that. What makes the EG6 infamous is his “gum tape deathmatch.” Before the race, Shingo tapes one of Takumi’s hands to the steering wheel, forcing both drivers to race with only one hand. The idea is to remove precise steering control and create chaos. Shingo believes his aggressive style and front-wheel-drive layout will give him the advantage. It turns the race into one of the most tense battles in Initial D. Instead of a clean, technical race, it becomes unpredictable. Both drivers must adapt instantly, relying on instinct rather than perfect steering inputs. Takumi ends up using the gutters of Akina to stabilize the AE86 and maintain control, eventually defeating Shingo despite the handicap. The EG6 becomes iconic because of that moment. This is where MF Ghost reminds you anime can elevate a scene in ways manga sometimes can’t. In the manga, this part of the race is easy to gloss over. But here they made Emma feel genuinely intimidating and somehow hilarious at the same time. Emma’s “witch face” wasn’t in the manga at all. That was an anime addition and it made this scene. This is what late Initial D started losing around 5th Stage. That warmth. Those human expressions that made you feel like these characters were real people. Initial D got colder which made something feel missing even when the racing was still good. MF Ghost brought that back. Not at First Stage levels. But moments like this prove they understand what made this franchise feel alive in the first place. On another note, what makes Emma genuinely unsettling isn’t just her skill. It’s the unpredictability combined with her tendencies. Kanata is skilled and unpredictable too, but he learned something else from Takumi. That instinct to drive clean. To avoid contact when possible. Emma learned from the same mentor but doesn’t replicate Takumi completely. That contrast alone tells you so much about both of them as drivers.
