Here’s how she does it: First up, decide what you want your knit to look like and sketch out your design Then you’re going to want to plop a scan or photo into Photoshop You’ll need to use a knitting grid to help create a pattern (you can find free knitting graph paper charts on Google) Once you’ve got the grid and the design, it’s time to trace your design into the grid using the Magic Wand tool and the Paint Bucket tool Finally it’s time to print your design and get knitting! 🧶 I started designing colourwork patterns after completing one colourwork project. Delusion? Confidence? Or found my calling? You choose… 🧶 I don’t like the name Pattern Knits. I chose it without enough thought, but I think I’ve gone too far to change it now…. But I do have two names in mind if I did rebrand. 🧶 I started off this project not weaving in ends as I go, and there are still some that haven’t been woven in… I’d love to say I learned from my mistakes, but it’s more of a ‘improved on my failings’ situation. I weave them in as I go about half of the time… 🧶 I don’t really wear hand knits. Hand knitted sock, and knitted hats in general give me *sensory feelings* and I’ve just never really knitted many jumpers or cardigans. I’d like to work on that though! 🧶 On days where I’m looking after my toddler, I spend her nap time knitting or designing. The washing up can wait. As can tidying away the toys from the playmat. 🧶 My yarn stash is overflowing but my time is not 💀 I have very little self control when it comes to buying squishy things… 🧶 I have big ambitions for Pattern Knits. I’m not ashamed to admit it, but I am slightly scared to!

Here’s a peek behind the scenes of my life as a knitting pattern designer! Honestly, almost every project has a few bits that need a couple of tries to get right, but that’s part of the fun. No pain, no gain, right? 😆 . This is the #refractasweater – a round yoke design in garter mosaic! The geometric shapes in the yoke don’t have any special meaning; I was just experimenting with the technique to see what’s possible. Aside from a few sections in this year’s #doeweyoke, this is actually my first time designing a garment using this technique. 🤓 . I wanted a technique that would really highlight the stunning @bilumyarns gradient yarns, which have these amazing extra-long color sections. 😍 Mosaic knitting felt like a better fit than traditional stranded colorwork or I’d still be stuck in the blue section at this point! 😁 .
