That’s not smoke — it’s the magic of decomposition at work.

That’s not smoke — it’s the magic of decomposition at work. Fresh grass clippings are packed with nitrogen, and when they hit the compost pile the microbes go into overdrive. As they break everything down, they generate heat… sometimes enough to make the pile steam in the cold morning air. This is exactly what you want in a healthy compost pile: active microbes, balanced materials, and plenty of life turning garden waste into rich soil. Tip- don’t pile grass clippings too thick on their own. Mix them with “browns” like dry leaves, cardboard, or straw to keep air flowing and avoid slimy layers. #Compost #HomeComposting #OrganicGardening #GardenTips #SoilHealth SustainableGardening GardenLife GrowYourOw

Is Your Compost Still ”Cooking“? 🌡️ Ever wondered why some compost melts snow while others doesn’t? Here’s a quick look at the curing process in action! What you’ll see: - The ”Cool“ Pots: This Reencle compost has been curing for several weeks. It’s stabilized, cool to the touch, and the snow stays perfectly piled on top! - The ”Hot“ Pots: Only 4-5 days into the curing process and these pots are still very active. You can actually see the steam rising! - The Science: That heat means decomposition is still in full swing. Nitrogen, carbon, and chemical reactions are working hard to stabilize the nutrients before they’re ready for your plants. Pro Tip: Always let your compost finish its ”cooking“ phase before planting. If it‘s still steaming, it’s not quite ready for your garden yet! #reencle #reencleuk #composting #UKGardening

Have you had success with a tumbler? I’m much more used to bay composting — browns close by, scraps layered carefully, manure and moisture added to balance the carbon and nitrogen dance. This pile is only covered while it’s new and the weather is warm. Heat builds faster that way. Microbes multiply. Decomposition accelerates. Tomorrow I’ll uncover it and add worms from my worm hotel. First the microbes. Then the worms. Always the soil. Happy composting! 🤎💚 Get composting, compost tumbler fail, outdoor compost, compost bay, microbes, worms, soil, making soil, compost recipes for success, trust the process, garden gold, garden processes

Ever wondered what the difference is between nitrogen and carbon sources? 🌱🍂 Fresh greens like leaves, flowers, and grass clippings start out rich in nitrogen. As they dry, fade, and become crunchy, they transform into carbon-rich “browns” — both essential ingredients for healthy compost. #Tumbleweed #composting #compostingFAQ #nitrogen #carbon #tumbleweedgardening

Instead of sending food waste to the landfill, worms transform it into living soil that feeds your garden from the ground up. Benefits of Vermicomposting: 1️⃣ Creates nutrient-dense worm castings packed with beneficial microbes 2️⃣ Improves soil structure, aeration, and water retention 3️⃣ Reduces household food waste naturally 4️⃣ Produces a gentle, slow-release fertilizer that won’t burn plants 5️⃣ Boosts plant growth, root development, and overall garden health It’s low-maintenance, space-efficient, and perfect for homesteaders, gardeners, and anyone wanting healthier soil naturally. DIY leaf mulcher - Just a $12 paint mixer and some zip ties.

DIY leaf mulcher - Just a $12 paint mixer and some zip ties. Pro Tip: use metal zip ties (yes there is such a thing!) or copper wire instead to avoid microplastics being added to your soil and only fill your metal bin to about 3/4 to avoid overflow while mulching... PS- The best thing you can do for soil fertility and insect and pollinator diversity is to leave the leaves. The next best thing, if that’s not practical because of slip hazards, blocked drains, or the need to remove leaves due to the risk of bush/wild fires is to collect them and turn them into leaf mould. If space or time are a premium, shred them and use them as mulch in the garden or as a carbon source in your compost. The worst thing you can do is throw them away. Everyone loses when fertility is discarded. Original video by bradfordography with edits by me

“Fast compost isn’t magic, it’s momentum.” ♻️🌱 The right pile size traps heat, feeds microbes, and turns scraps into rich soil faster than you think. Too small stalls. Too big suffocates. Balance is where compost comes alive. This is a quick tip for adding organic material to your garden beds. It works on perennial and annual food and flower gardens, but if you had disease problems I don't recommend using that plant material as mulch. It is best to put diseased plants into a properly managed thermophilic compost or burn them to avoid perpetuating the disease. Also beware of seeds in your organic mulch! Adding organic matter to your soil and increasing soil carbon is a great way to support your soil ecosystem, reduce watering needs, help nutrient cycling, increase soil aeration, and sequester carbon. You'll have healthier plants, healthier food, and less yard "waste." #soil #soilhealth #gardening #regenerativefoodsystem #permaculture #supportingsoil #avalilypermaculture
