Thinking about pruning your Limelight Hydrangeas in October? Here’s why you should hold off: Limelight hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so they won’t form buds until next spring. Pruning now won’t help and could leave them exposed to winter damage. The best time to prune is late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, for healthy blooms next year. However, feel free to snip off a few old blooms to create a cute fall bouquet! Those dried flowers can add a lovely touch indoors. Enjoy the blooms for fall décor, but save the heavy pruning for later! #gardening #gardeningtips #hydrangea #limelighthydrangea #pruning #pruninghydrangeas

This is fairly long demo. Consider it a meditation and apply this to any panicle hydrangea variety. I recommend late winter/early spring, which is usually around April Fool’s day where I am. Don’t wait too long or you’ll potentially be cutting off this year’s buds or perhaps just delaying the bloom time. Removing extraneous branches allows the plant to focus its energy on the ones they remain and tidying it up make it look better. Do you need to do this every year? No, but as I said to these clients, I do recommend it at least every other. Lots more hydrangea content in the highlights! Late winter early spring is when we prune our panicle type hydrangeas: lime light, quick fire, strawberry vanilla are examples. These are the hydrangeas with the cone shaped flowers. - 1st remove all the thin unproductive stems. Anything thinner than your pinky finger. - while you were removing the thin stems look for any other stems that are wounded where the bark has rubbed off. That’s a potential for disease. - next look for any crossing branches that could cause a wound. Remove one of the two crossing branches. - then look down the center of the plant and make sure there are no branches crossing through the middle of the plant. We want an open center plant where nothing is crowded and crossing. - on the healthy remaining stems, we only take a third of the length off. If we cut too much length off the new stems that the plant puts out this year are gonna weigh that short stem down and cause flopping. I am a Garden Coach located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Let’s talk pruning limelight hydranges. Pruning isn’t necessary or as scaring as it seems - these plants are determined to bloom and can be cut back pretty almost any time of year except for late spring/summer when they are preparing to bloom. I like to prune mine late winter/early spring before new growth appears. (Prune the 3D’s - dead, diseased or damaged wood - anytime of year) Here’s a few tips on how to prune your limelight hydrangeas - Make sure they are indeed Limelight hydrangeas - you don’t want to be pruning any hydrangea type that blooms on old wood this time of year because you’ll be removing the blooms! - Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood (Limelights, other H. paniculata and H. arborescens (Annabelle types) can be pruned almost anytime of year, as they are determined to bloom… just avoid pruning the season directly before blooming - It’s always a good idea to trim out branches that cross - If you need to control the size, or shape, you can cut the shrub back as needed (some people even cut them to the ground in fall - they will regrow) - To keep a sturdy base, I’d recommend not cutting them back more than 1/2 their height - Limelight hydrangeas and other paniculata hydrangeas can even be pruned into tree-form Bottom line is - now is a good time to prune your Limelight hydrangeas if you’re planning to do so. Just don’t wait to prune too late into the spring - and it’s OK not to prune at all! #limelighthydrangeas #hydrangea #pruning #garden #gardening #homegrown #homeandgarden

Spaghetti sticks! That’s what I call them. Scrawny little sticks that need to go. Pruning “limelight” hydrangeas Part two as promised! Remove all the sticks smaller than a pencil to clean up your shrub and prep it for spring. You can see how this one got a substantial trim this year. Be sure to watch my last video. It was time. It’s about 18-24 inches tall now and has 2-3 pairs of nodes on each stem. I like to give them a very open middle for more airflow during the summer because I know they fill in quickly. Cut off anything that is rubbing another branch or crossing awkwardly back into the middle. I prune mine in the fall because our snow is so heavy it does intense damage and it stresses out my husband. 😂 I’ve also noticed that in my yard the bushes I prune in fall (7a) grow larger for me than the ones I prune in spring. I’ve spent a couple years testing both times, so see what works best for your climate. I personally love the snow crusted flower heads but oh well. 😉 #HydrangeaGarden #GardenLove #hydrangeaqueen #HomeGarden #ReelOfTheDay #Flowers #FlowerReel #gardenreels #reelsinstagram #GardenInspiration #Gardening Tips of #GardeningLife #Hydrangea #ReelsInsta #GardeningFun #MyGardenThisMonth #HomeAndGarden #HomeAndGardenIG #Garden.ig #MyGardenToday ##FlowersOflnstagram #Hydrangeas #WhiteHydrangeas #ILoveMyGarden #GardenersWorld #hydrangealove #hydrangeaseason #paniculatahydrangea #mophead

Panicle hydrangea pruning can really make or break the plant, and I’ve learned over time that the less pruning you do, the better the plant is. In the end, this plant would never be pruned in nature anyways 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m excited to work on these trees and make them better for next year! #limelight #hydrangea #hydrangeatree #hydrangeapruning

The fun is in full swing over here….it’s time for my favorite garden chore…LIMELIGHT HYDRANGEA pruning!!!! This stunning girl is 1 of 10….maybe 11…I’ve lost count 😜 This panicle variety blooms on new wood…so you never have to worry about sacrificing new blooms during pruning. Last year was my 1st year pruning them harshly and I must admit the results were amazing!!! She grew well over 8ft tall and the blooms were larger than my head 😍😍😍😍 My care for her goes a little something like this: 1. Only prune is the spring time….I leave all the blooms through the winter because I love the way they age, dry, and add winter interest to my garden. 2. I wait for the buds on the branches to swell before I prune…it gives me a better visual for shaping and let’s me see the branches with no growth….those are cut all the way out. 3. I use a new, clean pair of pruners for this chore..this ensures I’m not introducing any diseases to my beautiful ladies. 4. I blow the base of the plant to clear any moist, decaying particles and check the crown of the plant. 5. Add a layer of compost or nutrient rich potting soil for a quick dose of nutrients as she wakes up from her winter nap. 6. Add fertilizer….I use the outer most branches as a guide for fertilizer placement….good rule of thumb…if the plant is that wide at the top… the roots are likely as wide underground. 7. Lay down barrier to suppress weeds…I use yard bags…it helps the soil conditioning. 8. Add mulch…it retains moisture for this water loving lady! 9. Water deeply and let nature take it’s course. This year I used @foxfarmsoilandfertilizer ocean forest potting soil as my compost layer and the acid loving plants fertilizer. #hydrangealove #springwork #gardenchores #limelights #limelighthydrangea #paniclehydrangea #hydrangeaseason #hydrangeaflower #hydrangeapaniculata #flowergrower #whiteblooms #gardenparty

It's amazing how much growth these Limelights hydrangeas put on from last year to this year 🥹 I planted them August 2022, only 2 years in ground...absolutely gorgeous! If you ask me...don't wait for fall to plant them -I planted 4 last October and I can see the difference in growth from the ones I planted in August....two months earlier give them enough time to adapt to your soil, create new roots and grow bigger for next summer! Hope you are having a great week so far! 🫠

Most people prune smooth hydrangeas WRONG… here’s what actually works 👀 I cut mine back HARD every early spring (about 6 inches) and they come back bigger and fuller every year 🌸 Don’t be scared to prune them — they actually LOVE it. I also use a simple fertilizer that makes a huge difference in how full they grow. 👇 Comment “LINK” and I’ll send you my full hydrangea care guide + everything I use (Canada & US) Save this so you remember what to do each spring 📌 IMPORTANT! These types are for Smooth hydrangeas!! DO NOT do this to your big leaf macrophylla hydrangeas. Bought these ones from @terraathome and they are from @provenwinners

How to prune a Limelight Hydrangea ✨ Thank you @mirandajdeboer for showing us how it is done! Look for the “V” in the main stems of the hydrangea and prune to a healthy bud just above it. Remove any suckers (long stocks that come from the base that are not part of the main plant). Remove any damaged, diseased, or interfering branches. This keeps good airflow through the plant and reduces risk of disease, mold and pests. (Tip for all shrub plant material!) You got this! ✨ #whisperingpineslandscaping #naturalluxury #protip #hydrangea #howto #tutorial #pruning #gardening #orangeville #fergus #guelph #elora #caledon #mono
