Sustainable travel…such a buzzword, right? But what does it really mean, and can I be a sustainable traveler? 🧳 Sustainability basically just means making choices in a way that doesn’t harm the environment or the places you’re visiting long-term. And in travel, it’s less about being perfect, and more about being aware and making better choices when you can! I’ve made some good choices here and there, like bringing a reusable water bottle or tupperware, but I’ve never actually thought about it the whole way through. I’m treating this trip like a science experiment. The question is: can I make a normal trip more sustainable without ruining it? My hypothesis is that small, better choices can actually add up. So throughout this trip, I’m tracking everything: transportation, hotels, food, activities…and rating how sustainable each decision really is. I’m using a really simple system: 🌱 is low effort/minimally sustainable 🌿 is a better choice 🌳 is a strong, more sustainable decision I’m calling it “Sustainable-ish”because I’m not trying to be perfect, just better. I’m spending the month living in the mountains of Ireland for free, and the cool thing, is anyone can do this. I found this work exchange through Workaway which is a platform that allows you to live for free in places all around the world in exchange for a few hours of work per day. There is also other platforms like Worldpackers and Wwoofing that allow you to find experiences like this. Most people think that travel is expensive but with platforms like this you can easily travel the world with a few hundred dollars a month. It is a huge privilege to have a strong passport on top of this though, so if you are lucky enough to have one, there’s no excuses to not be able to travel with how many amazing opportunities there are out there!
