Most people see us poking holes in soy wax and think it’s some random, chaotic candle-maker moment… but there’s a whole science behind it that nobody really talks about Here’s the real story: Soy wax holds on to air When we pour it, tiny air pockets hide inside the wax — you can’t see them, but they’re there And if we leave them trapped, they turn into sinkholes, dips, and those uneven tops that appear after the candle cools So yes… we stab the wax Not because something went wrong — but to make sure everything goes right Those little pokes free the air, let the wax settle, and give the candle a smooth, flawless finish as it cures. It’s one of those tiny, unglamorous steps that decide everything- How the top looks, how the wick burns, how the candle ages And once you know it, you’ll start spotting it in every handmade candle studio — that quiet moment where a maker is saving a candle before it’s even born So if it looks strange, trust me… these little holes are the reason your candle stays perfect from the first glow to the very last burn✨

Art of Wax tells you all you need to know about the ancient wax technique: Mitsuro Hikime. I share a recipe for you to create your own wax at home (it’s easy)! And I show you beautifully-shot, step by step pictures of my process. This technique is super fun to work with. The wax doesn’t stay soft for long so you need to work fast and make impulse decisions. In just minutes, you can create one of a kind pieces. The recipe and instructions are in my book Art of Wax available to buy on my new website www.artmatter.org.uk link also in my bio Hands up if you got yours already 🙋🏻♀️📕 or let me know if you’re ordering yours today! 🥰🙌 • • • • • • • • #artofwax #mitsurohikime #mitsuro #mitsurowax #waxcarving #waxcarvingforjewelry #waxcarvingforjewellery #waxcarvinglessons #waxcarvingclasses #waxcarvingworkshop #lostwaxcarving #lostwaxcasting #lostwaxprocess #waxsculpture #softwax #hardwax #waxsculpting #artofwax #waxmodeling #waxmodelling #waxmodel #jewelrymakingclass #sculpture #sculptureclass #waxcarvingbook #creativepublications #selfpublished

If your wax carvings look a little scratched or dull, these three quick cleanup steps can help refine the surface before casting. Step one is simply using denim as a gentle abrasive. The fibres in the fabric are just enough to smooth fine tool marks without aggressively removing material. Step two uses lighter fluid (naphtha). This works in two ways. First, it helps lift away any fine dust, wax debris, or polishing residue left on the surface. Second, because jeweller’s wax is made from hydrocarbon-based waxes, the petroleum solvent in the lighter fluid can slightly soften the outermost surface of the wax. When this happens, very fine scratches can blend together and become much less visible as the solvent evaporates. It’s important to note that this effect can also soften detail, so it works best on smooth surfaces like signet rings or clean sculptural forms. On heavily textured pieces, you may want to skip this step or use it very sparingly. The final step is a very light flame polish. Passing a flame quickly over the surface briefly melts the outermost layer of wax, allowing it to self-level and smooth out any remaining micro scratches. ⚠️ Be careful with this step. Too much heat will soften edges and remove detail, particularly on carved or textured surfaces. Also worth mentioning, this level of cleanup isn’t always necessary. Many wax pieces will be filed, emeryed, and polished after casting anyway, so small surface scratches in the wax often disappear during the metal finishing stage.

Lost wax casting lets me turn my handcrafted wax models into solid metal jewellery. The process works by placing the wax models into a mould, filling it with plaster, melting the wax out and filling the mould with molten gold or silver. Some stones like sapphires (I mostly use raw sapphire) can be cast in place which means they stay in the mould and have the molten metal poured directly over them. Only a few types of natural gemstones can withstand the heat during this process! I craft most of our jewellery pieces this way because I absolutely love the freedom it gives me while creating. I really enjoy the organic textures and unique designs that can be made with this process. The pieces in metal above are in their raw state, I’ve set any stones that need to be set, now they’re ready for me to clean up and polish! • • #lostwax #lostwaxcasting #tasmaniansapphire #tasmaniangemstones

Using the tiny vacuum table. Color is now just gray and no longer teal. Will work with my little burnout unit or vacuum assist sand casting. To use with a regular kiln the gasket needs to be replaced with a better one that I will have available soon. ************************************************** #investmentcasting #vacuumcasting #diycastings #craigdabler #lostwax #lostwaxmethod #lostwaxprocess #vacuumtable #sandcastring #sandcast #sandcastings
