To fit a quilt into the small throat space of your sewing machine, roll or fold the excess fabric tightly and secure it with quilt clips or pins. This keeps the bulk out of the way as you quilt. 🧵 Mark Your Quilting Lines. For straight-line quilting, use a fabric-safe marking tool to draw your quilting lines before you start sewing. A Hera marker, washable pen, or chalk pencil works well. 🧵 Adjust Your Stitch Length and Tension. For straight-line quilting, increase your stitch length to about 3.0–3.5 for a professional look. If you’re noticing skipped stitches or uneven tension, adjust your machine settings or try a new needle. A sharp quilting needle or a universal needle (size 80/12 or 90/14) is best for most quilting projects. 🧵Don’t Skip the Quilting Gloves. Quilting gloves provide grip and control when moving your quilt sandwich under the needle. They make it easier to guide the fabric smoothly. 🧵Take Breaks and Be Patient. The #jellysquarequilt is quilted up with the multi stitch zig zag. Every time I use this stitch I fall in love with it all over again. It’s partly nostalgia because I used this stitch a lot when I first started quilting. This is a more common stitch for machines to have than the wavy stitch. Straight-line quilting? More like vaguely parallel quilting. 😅 For match stick quilting I just use the width of my presser foot, line it up as best I can, and hope for the best. Took me a while to learn that no one looks as closely at my “wobbly straights” as I do and that’s a good thing! Reminder: no one’s staring at your stitches as hard as you are. Promise. 😁 Dee Stitch length is 5, the longest my machine will go using straight stitch. Thread is Gutermann 100% cotton 50 wt. Colour number 1444. If you’re getting puckers when quilting… it might be your machine. 🧵😬 Last year I upgraded from my beloved Janome 6600 to the 6700, and I was honestly shocked at how much smoother quilting became. Lumpy seam? Handled. Thick layers? No problem. I still love my old machine (it did a great job for a long time!), and technique definitely matters — but if you’re doing all the right things and still struggling, it might be time to consider an upgrade. You don’t need the fanciest or most expensive machine, but the right one can make a big difference. A stitch in the ditch foot is my secret quilting power when it comes to machine binding. The fin of the foot perfectly rides in the seam, and you move the needle to be as close as desired (basically invisible). Once set, you don’t need to watch anything except the seam as it presses against the foot. The needle will do its job without babysitting. 😂.
